This seems to be another area with very little if any information available. Looking around I found this

i wonder if any one has any other sources of ideas ?

A ball valve – ball between 0 rings – might be one possibility and even more difficult to make. I can't help wondering how the commercial designs get round the problems but wouldn't fancy buying one to find out.

Not quite sure what you are asking. If it is for a design for sight glass fittings then almost every loco design in ME for the last 70 years has shown the details. ( I don't have any earlier but probably more like 110 years). Some with and some without blow down and isolation valves. Also in several general and specific loco building books.

I have a Macc Models sight glass fabricated in a similar fashion to the one illustrated by Tony in the above link…

Doesn't seem to be a problem for me….
