Is it just my computer or is there a problem with the backpage key. Just lately I find the key works fine most of the time but on a number of occasions nothing happens even after repeated pressings and I have to go to the home page to go back to the latest postings list.

Have a look at the list of recent sites using the little arrow button near the backpage button dependingon your browser. You may find it is full of 'doubleclick' advert pages. Seems to be a fault with the adserver. I get it on several sites.

As you move around in here there's a whole bunch of external sites which shovel advertising stuff into each page move

The ME board software appears to be set up to prioritise these external loadups BEFORE the ME content you are after can appear… so if an advert goes awol or malfunctions the entire ballgame goes belly up

On other sites you would see a blank space where the advert should be if it failed, but the rest of the page would load up fine

Thanks for the replies, looks like its my computer that is causing the problem. Just to make matters worse I am about to change my broadband provider, with all the hassle that will produce. Ah well back to the workshop for some therapy!

You are clicking on "Latest Posts" just below the words Backpage Key, aren't you, and not on Backpage Key itself? Apologies if that seems to underestimate your computer literacy, but I tend to think of the silly things I've done from time to time!

Latest Posts is repeated just below the last message and above the Reply box. Does that work?

I should have Google'd for 'backpage key' before I asked here really but I forgot, so I have just done it now.

Google does not have the answer!

Yes, I know there are 'Back' buttons, refresh buttons, and all the rest of it, but the 'designers' of this site have seen fit to use the term 'Backpage Key' as some sort of title.

To me it has no meaning or no relevance to what is on the page, it just adds to clutter and as this thread shows brings confusion.

One day, hopefully, this website will be given an overhaul. I just hope its not done by the people responsible for the current version. I know some users are happy the way it is but I would rather it conforms to current conventions so we can use the browsers built in spell checker etc.

                                  Ian,

I think you will find that "backpage key" [in bold, green] is simply the title of this thread [as chosen by Doug]. … Compare the display of any other thread on the forum.

I feel daft now! must be one of my being really thick days.

The only bit I got right was the added confusion, mine!

I have just gone back to the originators post and I still dont know what key or button he was actually refering to.

Hi Ian- I did'nt explain myself very well, the "key" I was referring to was not a keyboard key but the small white arrow in a blue circle on the top left hand corner of the screen in Windows internet explorer. I tend to use it to go back to the homepage after I have read a posting so that I can click on the next interesting posting topic.

I do however realize that I may miss some postings if they have slid off the homepage.

I dont currently use IE but the button is the 'Back' button which (should) take you back to the previous page.

I do use that button but only very occassionally as I much prefer to click on ALL the topics I intend to read before I open and read the first one. The rest of them are then loading whilst I am reading so there is no waiting or going back and forth.

The thing to do is 'right click' on each topic and choose 'Open in new Tab'. You will then have all the ones you intend to read just waiting for you.

And I was referring to the downpointing arrow close to it that shows "recent pages". If it shows the doubleclick horror is the problem I use the " latest posts" above the reply box to get back to sanity.

Firefox currently offers the usual shortcuts plus a handy option to quickly open pages from a list of recently closed tabs – a godsend for someone like me who is always closing pages and then thinking…

Chrome (and probably others too) lets you open recently closed tabs. To be honest it needs to, because it is all too easy to close tabs (the wrong one) when you don't mean to.

PS, I dont want to start a 'my browser is better than your browser' thread. I have tried most of them and they all have good and bad points, Once I get used to using one I soldier on and just use it.

I too have seen the problem where going back a page just nets you the current page again. Usually I can hit <back> several times in rapid succession to get there. I've wondered if some sneaky sites are actually programmed to open twice (or more) in succession when you go to them to deliberately cause this effect. I think that's probably possible and if it can be done, I'm sure someone will do it.

That should have been: "the keyboard Backspace key ….."

(I'd put ' Backspace ' in carets and it disappeared. What a super editor. It wouldn't even accept ctrl-c/ctrl-v cut-and-paste to copy the original phrase and amend it. All it copied was the first word.)
