‘Agnes’ at Markham Grange

I went with my club down to Markham Grange one day last week to see the engines. What a great day out if you're into stationary engines. Anyway I was very taken with the northern mill engine called Agnes (who names these bloody things anyway? I suppose it could be worse, these days they'd be called Kylie or Roxy!).

I'd love to make a model of this thing one day but where does one start? Are there plans of them around anywhere? Its not too far south for me to visit the original occasionally so thats OK.

Anyway a future plan, might as well aim high eh?

Hi Wolfie

The nameplates were often refered to as 'Christening plates' on mill engines, rather than nameplates. Usually they were the names of the mill owner's daughters and such like.

If you enjoyed Markham Grange (great place) you should perhaps try to get to the Bolton Steam Museum's open days on May 6+7th.

I enjoyed the video,what a fantastic collection!

Diane is right about the naming of mill engines after the owner's wife or daughters.

Regarding a model,Peter Southworth of Chesterfield sold designs and castings etc,for a number of engines,including Corliss valve machines.

Sadly Mr Southworth passed away recently,but an aquaintance of his,I believe, has now taken over so the range so they should still be available.

Oh thats a handy link, might try one of those when I've done my beam engine, I like the marine engine too.

Diane, I'm on hol until 5th May, so probably won't make Bolton but expecting to be at Harrogate on Pickering stand
