Hi. I have purchased a Thiel 158 duplex mill and desperately need tool holders or accessories that are suitable. It’s the later model which takes the shortened MT5 tool holdersIMG_3680IMG_3718

Would it be possible to use a MT5 to MT3 adapter sleeve and use MT3 tooling at least for light work?

That is what I did on my lathe, the adapter sleeve was only case hardened so I could use carbide to get through the hard outer part, then it was easy to machine the rest.

          Hi and welcome

I had one of these some time ago, lovely machine, as mentioned above, I used the short 5MT to 3MT headstock adaptor from my then Colchester master to enable the use of 3MT tooling, as the 5MT tooling with it only included the very large size Clarkson chuck. I have seen these adaptors for sale used. they are bored right through so the drawbar can pass through.

The vertical head on mine had been converted to 40 INT when I bought it, there was someone at the time (20+ years ago) offering a conversion service. Don’t know if anyone still does the conversion. Never joined it but there was a Google Thiel group, probably on facebook now. Mine was very well used (and cheap),quite worn but still capable of very good work, great for gear cutting.

I have a similar dilemma with my TOS with MT4 tooling. Luckily it came with the horizontal drawbar but nothing for the vertical. I bought a MT4/ER32 collet chuck and ER32 collets then I had to grind the driving flats on the shank on my surface grinder.

I would suggest you buy a MT5-ER32/40 collet chuck and do the same, then any other tooling you may need you can use parallel shank stuff and hold it in a large collet.

Thanks Guys. I know I’ll end up making the tool holders but I’d like to find the original stuff if possible
