At the museum, we were given a large number of goodies by Rolls Royce which included a 6″ milling vise. I was going to put it in the museum’s sale of oddments, but the nut on the leadscrew was beyond repair. The design of the vise resulted in only half of the nut thread being engaged when the jaws were close together. Half of the threads were stripped. I bought an offcut of Meehanite and recut the leadscrew ACME threads a little deeper to restore the whole length and Gary used it for a gauge when making the new nut. I also remilled the ways and moving jaw so they are as new now. It is too good to get rid of and I made a pair of jaws 10″ long for the vise which can be used for bending sheet metal. It still has the original jaws which are case hardened and not bad, but the vise is rather big for our largest mill unless we were desperate. It opens 4″.
