Cruising Facebook market place last Thursday found an old milling vise , cheap and only 1 hour away. Couldn’t resist it so I picked her up. Had to dissasemble in the boot as was too heavy to carried into backyard. Pic 1 shows the bits on my bench. I decided to paint her. , pic2 shows her on the mill. Not sure how the pain will stand up to hot swarf but will find out2arule2green

Looks like a good un. Plenty solid enough for that mill!

Still needs to be bolted down to the mill table.🙂

Friend has just bought a mill (SX2P) and we are in process of commissioning a “goalpost” to align the vice on the table.

But not on the scale of the OP’s!

At the museum, we were given a large number of goodies  by Rolls Royce which included a 6″ milling vise. I was going to put it in the museum’s sale of oddments, but the nut on the leadscrew was beyond repair. The design of the vise resulted in only half of the nut thread being engaged when the jaws were close together. Half of the threads were stripped. I bought an offcut of Meehanite and recut the leadscrew ACME threads a little deeper to restore the whole length and Gary used it for a gauge when making the new nut. I also remilled the ways and moving jaw so they are as new now. It is too good to get rid of and I made a pair of jaws 10″ long for the vise which can be used for bending sheet metal. It still has the original jaws which are case hardened and not bad, but the vise is rather big for our largest mill unless we were desperate. It opens 4″.   _IGP3555
