I have in some magazine seen offers of packs of metal in various sizes. I think i might want to buy some but have lost the advert, can anyone help.

I can recommend Mike at Noggin End, as they do packs of assorted sections, diameters, materials etc.

I have no connection other than being a satisfied customer.

EKP Supplies sell metal packs. I've only used them for screws, but have been pleased with the service.

Mallard Metal Packs were and maybe are still advertised in ME.

Link below to their site's section about their packs. Good luck. I have no connection to the firm and have never ordered from them, I just remembered their name, by some miracle. JD

I gather that ladies of negotiable virtue feel the same way, John.

                    You figure, John?

Even after costs for staff to answer phones, deal with web enquiries, the website costs themselves, advertising, staff and equipment costs for cutting all stock in two foot lengths, fluctuating metal costs, facilities rent and all insurances, staffing admin costs ie payroll/ tax accounting, security costs, packing costs, shipping/postage costs, and the inevitable shipping/mailing losses, returns, the odd dissatisfied customer, staff time to deal with all the losses, returns, disat cust etc.?

Not saying prices don't seem a bit steep at a glance, but costs in the metal pack game could mount up rapidly and if you aren't counting all the costs + profit all the time to figure a valid price for piece goods, you are going out of business.

Go for it, but it could be more complex to make steady money at it than you think.

Thank you lads, seeing the recomendations suddenly triggered where I had seen the adverts.

I am getting old (76) so I need stirring sometimes.

Keep fotos in attic? I recently had a workman go in to my loft and with all the stuff up there, he said, “Does Alladin live up here ?because I cant find him!”

No, thats me as I am now. I am quite agile and still work 3 days a week in my calling of Inst. Tech. The only reason I dont work 5 full days is that the tax man will put me on 40% tax if I do.

I am a Beekeeper with 7 hives and it is a busy time of the year for me watching for swarms to come out. Bees are having a hard time at the moment with the bad weather. Been a Beekeeper for 45 years now. I still find time for my modelling and the like. I sometimes feel like the Pied Piper of hameln as the jobs roll in from the family. All the kids come to get their bikes repaired and tires pumped up. We have 4 Sons and 10 Grandchlidren to cope with. At the present time the only thing that drags me down is Asthma which seems to be affected by all the cold weather we are having. That stops me working outside if its cold.

I have completed harold Halls Indexing jig and also on the last legs of a 2 cyl. steam engine. have made a pipe bender and am now looking at a line scriber to use with harolds Indexer. Sitting in the background is the Evening star loco which needs a boiler, all the regs. etc. have really put me off that at the moment. I also make items that are needed at my work place, jigs and tooling that is expensive to buy from the Company that we support, LEICA in Switzerland, they want an arm and a leg for everything. Gotta go, lots to do.

I'm not at the three score and six yet and only have two granddaughters so I can imagine how full your life is, how on earth do you find time to go to work!

John, you remind me of meeting a neighbour in the local chemist shop a few years back, he was looking at a pile of 100gr bags of Alfa Alfa with a price of $NZ 10 each. He was a farmer, who grew Alfa Alfa, and relitivly speaking got nearer that per ton. Ian S C

                                  Ian,

We have things called 'farm shops' that try to brdge the gap. They often have to fill much of the shelves with foreign produce and speciality jam, especially if the only grow a few crops anyway :-/

Be careful and check before you buy. I ordered a pack of round section steel bars, some years ago.Amost half of the weight of the pack was made up by very small sections which are only good for mixing glue. As some time has passed I am not sure of which firm I ordered from. I did ring and complain and received a second pack, again largely made up with 2mm or so rods.

So what's this lot worth ?

That rack is 17' long 6' high and hold bars up to 3" or so.

The other metal rack outside is a bit shorter but holds from 3" up to 8"

Bandsaw can handle 13" round or 12" x 18" rectangular.

These remarks prompt a few thoughts:

                                            1. You are probably inviting an unwelcome visit from metal thieves
                                            2. You could offer reasonably priced metal packs to model engineers instead of being smug about the value of your stock……..
