          Hi Bill,

I guess it depends on how often (and hard) you intend to run the engine. Bronze is harder and the bearing will last longer. On most of my small engines that I just run for demonstration purposes I just use brass.

I don't know your engine design, how often you intend to run it or how easy it might be to retrofit replacement bearings Bill – but just as a thought, if you have ample stock of suitable brass – then why not make some spare bearings when you do the first set. It often doesn't take that much longer to run a second/spare set of these type of items once you are set-up on the machine.

As I said – Just a thought. Good luck with your engine.

            Regards,

            IanT

A related thought crossed my grey matter; does anyone know of where/who can supply brass/bronze bearing castings/extrusions. Stuarts provide bearing extrusions in their kits & I was wondering where/who I could buy extrusions from to make gland followers / pedestal bearings etc?

                George.

Try contacting Bridport Foundry, they may well sell you a stick of the Stuarts material.

Bill, make it from brass, but don't bother with spares, you'll put them some where safe, and if you need them they won't be where you think you put them, so just leave them in the brass bar for now, they won't get lost that way.
