I've had plenty of use out of my Aldi tap and die set but I've given up waiting for them to come up with a set of spiral flute taps. Can anyone suggest an alternative supplier for an economical set, say M3 – M10?

        Thanks, William.

The ARC ones are reasonably priced and work OK but don't know what the Aldi ones cost or you could just buy individual taps.

Brilliant, don't know how I overlooked these.

            Thanks, William.

The Arc set is out of stock, more is the pity as I would like to buy a set.

So would I, but it's been a long wait so far!

However, I have at last just got my R8 16mm Face Mill Arbour and 40mm Face Mills form ARC. Only been waiting since July for them to come back into stock..

From the archives, Aldi set cost £16.  But only the drills were HSS.

I also use the ARC ones, good quality and good price. I don't have the sets I get individual ones as jobs dictate. It looks like the individual ones are in stock both spiral flute and spiral tip. They also carry them in HSS-Co5.

I buy mine from APT. To give an idea of cost M3 is £4.00 and M12 is £10.00 both plus vat and shipping.

                      Regards.

                      David.

It probably doesn't help but I got a set 3 – 12mm with tapping drills from Greenwood tools at a show a few years back – they don't now list them but might be worth an enquiry. My go-to taps especially for power tapping.

Thanks all, particularly pleased to discover APT.

We were left a set of Lidl Parkside brand drills and taps in a legacy, and they are quite good. They are all hss and the drills are split point. I have used them sucessfully on mild steel, cast iron and aluminium. If you see a set there, have a close look at it.

APT is a very good firm, they also supply some carbide inserts singly for those who don't want to buy a box of ten.

The most economical spiral flute tap is the dearest one you can afford, it will pay you back many times!

Hats off to APT. Ordered three taps and a couple of inserts yesterday, arrived today.

And they have a sale on.

They are one of those companies that always seems to have a sale on or at least parts of the range shown discounted.

I prefer to buy single taps over sets. Some of the sets ive seen have been complete cr*p.

If you check ebay regularly you can get a bargain. I find Osborn HSS are very good value for money. Usually between £4-12 per tap.
