      How to spin from Brass

Does anyone have any thoughts or experience of spinning a GWR Pannier safety valve bonnet. I want to use a double safety valve as per Dough Hewson but that leaves no space for a cast bonnet hence the need for a spun item. Do you make it in two parts and silver solder around the narrow waist? what is the brass specification? any input please.

        Peter

          hi peter,

there are lots of ways to approach this, and no wrong or right way.

my GWR King has a formed safety valve cover, which is i believe how peter rich also made his.

my GWR Armstrong Standard Goods safety valve cover was turned very carefully from large dia brass bar. bored to ID, with steps, then put on a stepped mandrel and the outside turned and top inside curve machined. you can get the material pretty thin in the middle by this method which is what you want.

gunmetal is of course unsuitable for the second above method, plus is the wrong colour for an unpainted safety valve cover.

          cheers,

          julian

            Thanks Julian

The stepped method seems like a winner plus I have a large billet of brass bar which would be suitable it will just need drawing out no great problem I just need the original drawing which I am sure will be available in the archive at York. Incidental Jim Scott is a member of our club his Terrier is an excellent job it looks like you snapped it on our stand at Harrogate.

            Regards

            Peter

              hi peter,

i have some pretty good drawings of the fullsize covers which i have carefully scaled down for 5"g so might be able to save you the expense of getting stuff from the NRM.

              cheers,

              julian

as a slight aside unless you have modified the valve gear on PANSY i think a scale double safety valve is the least of your worries! mine is heavily modified. if you fancy the details (approved and checked by Don Ashton) send me a pm.

anyone else building PANSY to drawings please dont make the safety valve bush 5/8" thread. a gordon smith single valve with 1/2 X 26 tpi bush for same will be more than adequate.

                cheers,

                julian

                  Thanks Julian

That would be excellent save me a lot of work. Any expense let me know I would be pleased to meet. The valve gear has already been modified to Don Ashtons approval using Doug Hewson mods including fitting the extra pivot blocks. I have also changed the coupling rods to the correct profile modified the backhead to get rid of that horrible steam turret and a personal whim fitted two gauge glasses I know not what GWR did but it seems all wrong to have only one gauge glass. I am just finishing off gluing up the boiler today.
                  Thanks

                    Good afternoon Peter,

If you intend on retaining the cover in it's polished state and not painted as the locomotives were originally outshopped, then you'll need to form it from either some drawn brass tube or spun from some sheet brass; the problem with making the casing from a billet of round brass is the colour, although thats not quite so bad as a so called "gunmetal" casting as advertised by some suppliers.

Should you need a suitable drawing, let me know with a pm and I'll scan one of my works drawings.

P.S. The GW never fitted their boilers with two gauge frames, couldn't see any advantage in it; all drivers carried a spare glass tube or two, plus sealing rings etc, not to mention a pair of cycle clips!

                    Regards,

                    Bob Youldon
