Good evening – I have just bought a new Sandvik hand-scrapper from their UK base near Birmingham.

I rang them today to ask if the tool was supplied with a blade – but TBH there was a problem with communication – maybe a bad ‘line… The website image shows the tool, complete with blade, but the telephone conversation that I had seemed to indicate otherwise…

can anyone here confirm if the scraper will arrive complete with blade – or not…??

      TIA

Many thanks… I had thought that this might be the case…

There is also the question as to whether the blades supplied by Sandvik are ground & ready for use(?)..

I have read elsewhere that this certainly used to be the case; but reading through a few other forums (largely US-based) it may be that now they are supplied ‘blank’ – ready to be ground to suit the end-users requirement…

I use them straight out of the box.
You will need a way to sharpen them back to the mirror finish

I’ve not tried one myself (yet) but this eBay item might be of interest

Bill, many thanks for the ebay link, certainly an attractive price…. I think my Sandvik is likely to arrive sans-blade, so I may well give these a try👍

                    Just been in the workshop.

The one thing I did do was just run the corners on a diamond plate to round them.

                    Out of the box:

                    Rounded slightly:

                    IMG_6931

This helps stop them causing a gouge when you inadvertently catch a corner.

The Sandvik inserts have a mirror finish on them, the eBay ones probably need work to get there.

I wasted a considerable amount of time & money looking for a suitable grade of carbide to make a hand scraper during the first Covid lockdown.
The ones I linked to have one appeared since then.
What I did find, for making a small scraper for internal dovetails, was some carbide blades marketed for Linbide paint scrapers, which seem to take and hold an edge OK.
This is an Amazon link for some which look identical, in both shape & outer box, but I’ve no idea if they are the same grade of carbide as the ones I found

Those TCT Knives are used in wood machining, rebate blocks etc, and are widely available from woodworking machinery suppliers and sharpening services. Many other sizes are available.

One of the sharpening services I used to use, used to collect the blunt ones, re-grind them, and sell them on for decorators paint scrapers.

If you are near a Joinery Manufacturer/wood machinist you could probably get used ones for free, they will need re-sharpening/profiling though.

I don’t know what grade of carbide is used, (usually described as,”Micro Grain”), but I do know that the ones supplied now have a much better finish, and are sharper than they used to be several decades back, when I first used them.

If anyone fancies trying them out, I’ll put a few in the post, they will be blunt/nicked!!

I’ve  spent my life being both blunt and nicked, so familiar territory!!

The Sandvik carbide blades are fantastic quality you’ll be hard-pressed to find better. They do work out of the box for sharpness but you’ll find the radius a bit large for novice work, it’s easy to dig the edge in and gouge your work piece. you’ll need some way of sharpening them for sure. If you have a lathe you can buy the 6″ diamond lapping disks from ebay and stick them to the face of your chuck with double sided tape. Cover the ways with a cloth and away you go.

The ebay ones will work you just have to sharpen them more.

I have had one of these for many years, they are great for roughing out but as already said more difficult to sharpen.

Don’t wish to be thought “old fashioned” but, my best scraper was made frome an old millenicut file, much easier to sharpen and much more delicate “feel”.

A diamond wheel sharpens them nicely. You buy different blades for different types of scraping and materials you are scraping. Often have several scrapers. I like the file made ones. You can make them from Carbide inserts that also work very well. Micrograin carbide is the secret, a grade used for interrupted cutting will hold its edge a lot better than the more brittle constant cut inserts. Or use a milling insert. I use the non coated ones.

I often just bond the insert to the holder using JB weld glue. Old files make great holders too.

Please feel free to correct me if I’m missing something, but the holder looks simple enough to make, and would even benefit from a tactile wooden handle.  Assuming I’ve been looking at the same tool, £80 or thereabouts seems a high price for what it is.  Although, if it does come complete, most of the price seems to be for the insert.

I paid around £70 direct from Sandvik. The blades are £40 each (so £30 for the tool itself), and are sold in a box of 5… 🫣😳

Today the eBay blade arrived, from ‘impractical machinist’ …. At around £20-quid probably around half the price of a genuine Sandvik item…

I have yet to give it a try, but it looks well finished, with an unknown radius (Sandvik’s are square) and what looks like a decent negative relief…

I am looking forward to seeing how this goes… 😎👍
