Not ME but in desperate need of help

New washing machine arrived today. Old one had twin hot and cold water feeds. New one just has a cold feed. So I need to blank off the hot water feed. It has an inline check valve but there is still a slight weep even when its turned off.

So I need to buy a blanking nut to seal the end of the check valve. The brass pipe attached to the check valve is 15mm OD.

SWMBO wants to wash tomorrow as we’ve not had a washer since last Saturday and we’ve got a 2 and 6 year old who need their school kit cleaned. What size blanking nut do I need to but tomorrow when Screwfix open?

Thanks for any help. You could be a life saver!

Hi I commisterate but your supplier should have supplied one these are usualy a BSP thread and very standard go to your local builders merchants and explain take the blue pipe along and they will give you a suitable blanking nut go home say job done and then back to workshop with SWMBO singing praises.

Hi John, if it is anything like the photo below.

It should be 3/4 BSP I believe.

Take a look at the link below.

            Regards Nick.

                Yes I can confirm it’s 3/4″ BSP

Also make sure there is no drip around the “tap” shaft as these type of fittings can leak from there once disturbed after a period of time.

And if buying from a shed make sure no one has pinched the rubber disc washer from inside

                  Hi John,
JasonB makes a good point. If the tap is weeping then it is a sign that the seals are worn so the “O” ring seal on the spindle is likely to leak as well. Why not just replace the tap with a stopend fitting. The threads on most compression fittings are the same so I would suggest that you leave the original nut and olive on the pipe. Screwfix sell 15 mm stopends in packls of 2 for £2.49 ( Code: 65021) and Toolstation sell them singly for 95 P
(Code 87972) When wee replaced our washing machine I used the nut and rubber washer from the old flexible pipe and made a brass disk which fitted in the nut with the rubber washer between the disk and the end of the tap. (The nuts from some garden hose fittings are the same thread.) To make the disk put a heavy centre pop mark on a piece of brass, cut it to a rough circle then held it between a live centre and a block of wood in the chuck and turned it to size. I think I also put some double sided adhesive between the disk and the wood. I think I also turned a small shoulder on the disk to locate it in the hole in the nut.
                  Les.

                    Hi all,

I need to fit a new clod water valve, current one is leaking from the tap. Whats the best method of tightening the nut?

The opposite end is in "fresh air" and the whole unit is spinning and i cannot tighten it enough to create a sound joint

                    Thank you

                    David

                      Hello David,

Take off the handle so that you can get a pipe wrench onto the body of the valve and tighten the pipe nut against that. Don't tighten it more than is needed to seal the leak otherwise you are likely to crush the pipe olive

                      Regards Brian

                        Hello David

There are usually two flats, sometimes on raised pads, on the body of the tap so you can get a spanner on it – not easy if it is next to a wall.

                        P.S. Welcome to the forum!

                        Neil
