This is a Model Engine running just off a naked flame, thought some might be interested in seeing it run.
They are most commonly called Flame Licker Engines or Flame Gulper Engines or Vacuum Engines.
Very interesting to muck around with and I’ve done a lot of modifications and work on this one –

an impressive little demonstrator, and the magnet in the burner looks a great idea.

This is my flame licker which is gas powered. Jason built it firstly and the drawings were on this site. I used them to make my copy which works well.

Thanks Michael I’m very happy how this turned out and the addition today of a second rare earth magnet in the copper burner that I made, has anchored it now very firmly in place.

David that’s a beautiful engine and a credit to Jason.

Have you got a link to a video of it running? I’d dearly like to see it if you do.

David do you get much soot coming off the gas flame?

There was only a small amount of soot which wiped of after cooling.

I had not been following this thread after looking at it originally due to the “clickbait” title, I’m sure less would visit if it just said flame licker running.

Looking back at what I wrote the status of Alyn Foundry has changed and they are again casting engines so if anyone wants to do the larger original size engine that Graham Corry designed which is available in several configurations then they can be had once again.

He also does castings to order for this one

Grahams Youtube also has quite a lot of flames flying about

Is the world really so sick that proper use of the word ‘naked’ can cause concern ?

“Clickbait” is the term used when an image or wording is used to make people more likely to click on a link often to get viewing figures up.

Had the title of the thread just said “Chinese flame licker running” I may not have looked but an engine running off just a flame, naked or not got the better of my curiosity.

but I took ‘naked flame’ as a Plain English term being used by a decent antipodean contributor to this forum.

So did I, but it is the title as a whole that drew my interest. I have a liking for Flame lickers, Hot air engines, hot tube ignition, flame ignition, etc so that is what drew me in the hope of an interesting old engine or model built from a patent drawing, alas, it was just a Chinese licker.

Could that also be why the OP only posted the url and not the Youtube preview screen as he has done in the past for other engines in the hope of more views?

No, this forum software is not very intuitive and is (for me at least) is complicated.

Maybe yourself as a mod can enlighten me on the correct process so that in the future I don’t get unwarranted accusations as above? After pasting the URL what does one then click? As sometimes there is a preview screen and other times there’s not.

I’ve made countless gas burners (mostly with ceramic inserts AKA like BIX) the few times I’ve tried to make simple copper tube ones with the end silver brazed and a few very small diameter holes drilled, whilst they worked well I could see a LOT of soot rising from the flame. Its a bit hard to see in your vid, but do you have a jet in your gas line?

Under your youtube video there is “share”

                                                yt1

Click that and then select copy

                                                yt2

You can then paste that into your post I tend to use CTRL and V at the same time to do that. No need to click any of the icons and it will just show the url until you submit the post after which the youtube image will show.

It is also possible to use the link item. For example type look at my latest video. Then go back and highlight the text, click the link item, paste that same share url and then the apply (bent arrow) incon in blue. This will just give clickable words but does not give people an indication of the content.
