When I bought an ER32 collet chuck from Warco, I made up my own back plate for the lathe and mounted the chuck on that. The back of the chuck was coated with Loctite, before lightly bolting it up. I then used a Verdict finger clock in then taper bore and tapped the chuck until run out was less than 0.0005"

One advantage of not having the R8 pin in the spindle of the Tom Senior, is being able to refit the tooling at any position. I used this method to get zero runout with er25 tooling, but whether it was actually worth the bother, I am not sure about. Is going from 0.001"tir to zero worth it?

Thanks chaps – lots of good information!

I was ready to place an order with arc for some other bits so i will tag on a couple of imperial collet sizes to mount some imperial cutters i have – if they shape up well than job sorted.

            Cheers

I doubt many of the sizes are that close to what was on the drawing but I do know it will work………..

Which is precisely the point I was making.

Dan – I recently made an ER40 lathe chuck. I bought a couple of 'no name' collets from RDG and one from ARC to suit the work I had in hand. Checking them out in the 'as turned' chuck (so effectively zero runout on the chuck taper) I got better than 0.01 mm TIR at 50mm on all three collets. Maybe I struck lucky – I'll be interested how you fare as at some point I'll be wanting to buy or build up a full set.

                Robin.

Haas Automation recommend low friction ball bearing nuts and they recommend a torque of 140Nm/100ftlbs with low friction nuts. They also say (but do not specify the value) a higher torque is required for standard nuts.

One other option, is to make your own. Requires a lathe and a method to slit them, and debur afterwards. Pre hardened steel around 40Rc like 4340 steel bar works great. Can still be all done with hss tooling if you don't have carbide, and can be slit with a hacksaw or junior hacksaw if you don't have a mill with slitting saws.

                      Hi,

I thought it might be useful to others if I updated this thread with details of my collet purchase.

I bought one of the sets from arceurotrade and have no regrets at all. They are a big improvement on my original ebay set and after running the dti on the first few uses I haven't felt the need to check run-out any further.

I have more error in the collet chuck than I do in the collets and with care if I mount the chuck in the best position the collets that I have checked have been in the region of 0.005mm to 0.01mm concentricity when measured around 10mm from the face. Good enough for me!

Hope that helps others who may be looking at similar choices and thank you for the advice received in this thread.

That's good to hear ! I bought a set a year ago but things have conspired to prevent me using them yet. Noel

I have had good quality tooling from APT, they sell three grades of er collets. They also have a selection of carbide inserts available singly for hobbyists who do not want to buy boxes of ten.
