anyone one on here bought the economy engine from the engineers emporium recently

      mine turned up last week

the castings are diabolical they don’t even meet size before machining and I know castings very but these are awful full of sand and inclusions

anyone else had this problem and a way round it before I send the lot back

I collected an economy engine kit and started on one just before lockdown, Link, and must get around to finishing my postings here.

The castings were all of good quality with plenty of machining allowance. I did have a problem with the cylinder liner, lots of inclusions, it was quickly replaced without question after a phone call. I'd suggest you get on to EE, in my experience they are very helpful and good people to deal with.

Edit: Following Andrews comment I remembered about the errors for the bearing cap but it is a very easy workaround.  Drop me a line if you need help.

Oh dear, that's disappointing. Even worse they seem to be going downhill. I bought my kit around 15 years ago, when the engine first came out. There were drawings and parts missing. My main body casting was wonky. After a lot of aggro the owner realised I wasn't going to go away and gave me a new one. It's been quite a while since I worked on it, but I recall the main casting and crankshaft bearing caps were too narrow, I altered the design to take account of this. I eventually got the flame cut conrod supposedly included. It was too thin to machine to thickness so I binned it and used some hot rolled steel instead.

I used the main casting, bearing caps, cylinder block, cylinder head and flywheels, although the flywheels are undersize as one casting had quite a deep blowhole. I binned the small light alloy castings.

I suppose it depends upon whether you are willing, and able, to make the changes needed. Clearly working engines have been built from the kits but it's a shame it isn't a straightforward build.

Personally I wouldn't deal witrh the company ever again. The kit was disappointing and worse the owner was rude and agressive at times.

15 years is a long time – grumpy may have retired – or moved on – in that time. However, poor quality should not be accepted – you paid good money for a kit and should expect the component parts to be of merchantable quality.

No different than the seller refusing to supply, if you had sent ‘dodgy’ money or less than asked for? Simple, do not accept rubbish quality unless you paid a rubbish price for it!

There is a chap on MEM who got a set of castings September which is probably the most recent set to be started and they seem OK from his posts so far, Don't recall Nick_G having too many problems with his build on here a couple of years back.
