Thanks Michael. Two useful new words: extremotolerant and extremophile. Can't wait sneak them into an ordinary conversation!

What an interesting experiment: I wonder if the Tardigrades living in my gutter in mild SW England are as tough as those from Nivo, Denmark? Looks fairly easily to repeat the experiment and find out.

That animals can survive such severe conditions must have practical applications. Fame and fortune await the person who discovers how they do it. About time I won my Nobel Prize…

Hmmm… but they got a 200-neuron brain, and can be eaten by anything big enough for you to see, without it even knowing it's done so… If that's part of extremotolerance I'm not sure I'm interested… devil

Sorry, I got no further than the title of your link paper.

Espresso is a brutal and brutish way to treat coffee – it draws out and emphasises all the bitter side- and after-tastes. Jug or filter every time for me.

The German in me resents the Italian kudos over coffee almost as much as the Brit in me resents the German one over Engineering.

Blast it Mick, you've successfully deployed my new word first! My week is ruined!

Never mind, I can still roast Michael's beans for daring to discuss Coffee in the Tea Room…

                      Hi there, all,

                      Hopefully not too far off-topic:

I read somewhere, long ago that coffee was native to the Arab Peninsula. It became a productive crop in South America after the seeds were smuggled there in the hollowed-out handle of a walking stick.

This next bit is even further off-topic!

In a similar way, the rubber tree was originally found in Central & Southern America but became a notable crop in the Malayan peninsula after, wait for it, the seeds were smuggled there in the hollowed-out handle of a walking stick!

Please note: my last formal Geography education was in 1951 – please indulge me and forgive me if my geographical terms are out of date.

                      Best regards,

                      Swarf, Mostly!

The observations about grain size and effectiveness also apply to coal firing a 5 in loco in my experience. Marble size being optimum though marbles are rather difficult to keep on the shovel.

On another forum by coincidence yesterday the topic was egg coffee. The long winded process seemed to have some scientific backing but to my mind would lead to a cold beverage as disgusting as iced tea.
