Whilst browsing on eBay a 150mm 6-jaw San-Ou chuck appeared at a really silly price. I had absolutely no use for it but happen to have a spare 6″ L0 back-plate for the Student so it went on the ‘watch list’. After having previously bought an 8″ 4-jaw self-centring San-Ou chuck, the quality of which cannot be faulted, and which hardly ever leaves the lathe these days after bit of ‘humming and harring’ (and at least a couple of beers) I hit the ‘Buy-it-Now’ button to Pay-in-Three with PayPal.

It arrived today and turned out to be a massive 10″ chuck that I can hardly lift! I am absolutely certain I bought the 6″ 150mm chuck that was listed, but on checking on the purchase history it does actually state 250mm. Talk about a fool and his money being easily parted although I am fortunate enough not to be going to suffer any hardship because of this ‘faux pas’. I could try to sell it on but I can’t see many model engineers wanting this monstrosity.

So the moral of this tale is don’t go online after you have been in the pub. It’s the second time I have done it, the last time was when I booked train tickets from New York to Niagara Falls, USA and then booked a hotel in Niagara Falls, Canada. It then cost me a hire car to get over the border and back. BTW, I have just got home from the pub. Some people never learn!

Send it back? Paypal are very good at refunds and under UK law you dont need to prove a fault, but the postage might make it unfeasible.

I have decided I need to send it back but there is a problem. It was delivered by Evri but Ebay has provided a Royal Mail returns label. The problem is the item weighs 23Kg and it states that an item that weighs more than 20Kg cannot be accepted at the Post Office. A parcel between 20Kg and 30Kg has to be sent by Parcelforce. Does this mean it won’t be accepted by Royal Mail or just at the P.O. for Parcelforce? If RM will accept it I can take it to the local RM distribution centre which is 7 miles down the road from me but I can’t seem to find any information on this and the eBay automated assistant is useless like all this AI driven nonsense. I suppose I will have to drive over there and ask at the RM counter if they would accept it with a valid return address label or even pay extra for Parcelforce and cut my losses. Worth a try I suppose.

Looking at the Royal Mail online prices guide 20kg is the maximum parcel weight by RM. On there is says that heavier packages should be sent by Parcelforce.

I guess that RM will weigh the package when you try and hand it over so will quickly twig that it’s over the top.

Just drop it off at the post office and keep the receipt. They accept parcels for

              Parcel force.
