      Hello all.

Looking to buy a Mt2 revolving centre, wondered if anyone had any recommendations,

In an ideal work a Bison or Skoda would be nice, but at those prices not very likely,

      Thanks

      Brian

          Brian,

Before buying 'cheap' have a look at Nick's thread from last year.

A good secondhand one might be your best choice.

I got my MT3 Skoda when it was on offer, think I paid about £50 for it, very nice it is too and quite a small body which is handy for getting in close to small work

As a point of interest while looking at revolving centres I did spot this

              centre.jpg

which is a boring head with a revolving centre in place of a tool so no need to move the tail stock for long tapers.

                .

I do have another 'put-me-on'. But on my future list is either a Bison or a Rohm small bodied extended point spinney roundy twirly thingy.

I would say a second hand one is a gamble unless you know where it has come from. Why would anyone get rid of a good one.??

                Nick

With the bearings that are available these days, could a live centre be made accurately in the home workshop? .

Several designs from the basic (just a plain bearing with a big steel ball at the end) to the complex have been published in ME and MEW over the years.

For many years a very desirable one that was made by a chap as a business sideline was advertised in ME and MEW. He was the subject of a workshop visit in one issue.

I bought one of Arc's standard ones a couple of years back at a show and it works fine. Body is a bit big though, but I think they do a JS designed one with a narrow body too. Or they did – just had a look and can't find it any more.

I have a 2 MT Skoda one, it's the second one I'v had, wore the first one out. It cost about $NZ95, about the same as Jason's 3 MT one, quite reasonable I thought.

When I first got my lathe, live centres were one of the things I made a number of, basically for wood lathes.

Years ago, I bought a cheap 2MT revolving centre. The bearings must have been duff as using it seemed to result in more vibration and chatter than a greased dead centre.

I have often thought about using a Boring Head in the Tailstock for taper Turning, to avoid upsetting the Tailstock alignment. However, the travel must be absolutely horizontal, or the offset will not be accurate, and since the axis of the workpiece will depart from the lathe axis, in the vertical plane, over its length, cutting problems could result.

If decent bearings are available, it ought to be possible to make a small revolving centre with a shank to fit into the Boring Head. Sounds like another "Round Tuit" job has arisen!

                              Thanks all for the advice.

Like the idea of making my own, but my to do list is getting out of hand.

Have bought a used Skoda so fingers crossed it will be ok,

                              Thanks again

                              Brian
