Been given old sewing machine that works.

Is it worth keeping motor and pedal for anything?

          • Watchmaker's lathe
          • Small flexible shaft tool
          • Small milling spindle, for the vertical slide
          • Diamond hone for sharpening small tools

Will that do for starters ?

I'd go for number 3 but I'm a bit weird like that. Yesterdays's job:

              I do think that's a neat installation.

I used one on the Super Adept, until I got a 1450 rpm 180W shaded pole motor, more torque, less revs. I think there are 2 or 3 sewing machine motors in my electric motor store, ranging from 80 W to 120 W. Tried one on a flexible drive, but a bit under powered. Made up a spinning wheel for mum using one, it worked well, she used it mainly for plying the wool, ie., combining two or three single strands.

Horses for courses, I suppose, Ian

This one would be no good for porting motorcycle cylinder heads, but …

Have you shopped that photo Rod?

It looks like a painting out of the pages of Eagle.

'fraid so. I forgot to switch on the LED ring light so It was rather dark – messing about with the mid tones has that affect.

What sort of cut can you get from it Rod? I'm gathering bits for a toolpost come when not on it tool grinder and keep coming up with numbers like 1/2 hp.

would it work as mini drill for say up to 3mm?

I bought a sewing machine motor after putting out a plea for advice on this forum for a motor to drive a toolpost-mounted spindle I was constructing:

general arrangement from the front. Where its meant to be.

Two-speeds achieved by swapping driver and idler pulleys.

I liked it so much I built another one!

                            Mounted radially on the lathe

Only this time with two speeds via gears and more compact.

Keep the motor! You never know when it might come in handy for any of the projects that Michael suggested, or even some you haven't thought of yet.

                              Hi John,

Have a look in this thread. 10-20 thou in steel.

                              Cheers,

                              Rod

Thanks Rod. I feel I need better speed control built into the motor than that for grinding. It's interesting as they seem to specify them via watts in rather than out but when they are running below the supposed 7,000 rpm on a sewing machine they probably give more than that. The other thread was interesting I did play with the brushless model engines idea briefly some time ago via a server 12v supply that provided a lot of amps. Speed with the controller I had wasn't too constant and they became rather warm. That was with a meaty low revs per volt motor.
