Leeds-based engineering outfit MetMo has adapted a 1912-patented mechanism into an ultra-precise locking tool for makers and model engineers.

Anyone working on small parts, model engineering or delicate electronics knows the frustration of a tiny component slipping from standard tweezers and launching across the room into the carpet monster.
To solve this perennial issue, MetMo has launched its latest crowdfunding project: The MetMo Precision Grip. Combining a lost grip mechanism patented in 1912 with modern CNC engineering, MetMo has introduced a new class of tool designed specifically for high-precision gripping and work-holding.

Why rethink the precision tweezer?
Traditional tweezers rely on sprung tension that can cause hands to fatigue or snap shut unexpectedly. Mechanical locking pliers, on the other hand, are often too aggressive and mar delicate surfaces. MetMo bridged this gap by adapting a miniature drive screw mechanism, similar to those found in high-precision machining equipment, to give users exact control over clamping force.
The result is a tool that can dial in anywhere from a soft pinch to an astounding 1160 psi (80 bar) of clamping force at the nib tip — roughly equivalent to the bite pressure of a spotted hyena, yet metered with surgical accuracy.
Key workshop features:
- 3-in-1 versatility: Functions as a spring-loaded tweezer for sorting screws, a locking hand grip, or a miniature desktop vice when paired with MetMo’s Third Hand Stand or C-clamp mounts
- Anti-twist solid barrel: Built around a rigid barrel hinge that prevents the lateral twist and tip misalignment common in conventional sheet-metal tweezers
- Interchangeable and custom jaws: Quickly swap between standard, fine point, needle nose, reverse jaws and angled variants. The design also accepts 3D-printed custom jaws for bespoke workpieces
- Ergonomic comfort: Engineered with a comfortable palm profile to eliminate hand cramp during extended soldering, painting, or assembly sessions.
Built for generations: Heritage engineering
Designed to outlast modern throwaway tools, every Precision Grip is completely strip-down serviceable and backed by MetMo’s signature 200-year guarantee. The tool is offered in three material executions:
- Aerospace grade 7075-T651 aluminium (70.3g): Hard-anodised black for lightweight agility and general benchwork
- Surgical 316 stainless steel (114.5g): Autoclave-safe, corrosion-proof and designed for extreme workshop environments
- Grade 5 Titanium (83.3g): Ultra-tough, non-magnetic and impervious to harsh chemicals — the peak of material engineering.
