This is a rare chance to acquire a set of nine prints from the original drawings of the full size 1895 Snowdon Mountain Railway rack locomotives. These were purchased from Adtranz, the successor company to SLM, and come from the SLM archives. Apart from a few pencil notes (translations from German, mainly) they are clean, unfaded and very clear. Two or three of them relate to an identical locomotive design being contemporaneously built in 1894 for the Wengernalpbahn in Switzerland. The drawings contain enough detail to build a representative near scale model of an existing 1895 loco as still in use on the SMR. Since the track is of a very special type, my intention was to build a model for 160mm gauge track on a 25 ft ramp which rose about 2ft 3ins (1 in 11, as on Snowdon): this corresponds to a one-fifth full size model: as the model would never be expected to run on one of our ‘standard’ tracks, this makes scaling the full size dimensions easy. It could of course be built to one of our usual scales, but would there be any point? The loco drives off the rack, not off the wheels. However, I could never find enough time to progress this project, and now my age precludes it. Also included in the offer are two books about the SMR and a number of notes and photographs, which might be helpful to a prospective builder. To buy this set of drawings today, even if they are still readily available, the cost would be probably be about £250. The price asked includes postage and packing.
