Watch Model Engineering Exhibitions from years gone by

With footage going back as far as 1949 and right up to 2020, and even including royal visitors, it’s fascinating to look back at these events over the decades.

1949

“Schoolboy Critics at Model Exhibition” reads the title card in this footage from August 1954, showing that year’s exhibition in what has now been renamed Lawrence Hall but was then still the “New” Horticultural Hall.

1952

1973

“Steam rather than spaceships” was the mood at this 1973 exhibition, according to the voiceover in this footage.

1977

By 1977, we’re in colour! Apparently the exhibition was crowded with “children of all ages”.

2009

We jump ahead into the 21st century with a look at some of the steam layouts to be admired back in 2009.
