I'm using the beta version of Internet Explorer 9 so some of my issues could be related to that, but put bluntly, the forum software here is just about as bad as it gets.
There's no way to include pictures in a post without creating an album and linking to it. If you then remove that picture from the album, the picture disappears from your forum post, which just looks sad .
There are no attachment facilities either, so you can't help people with things like their software or drawing problems.
Formatting always messes up for me after posting with Line Feeds and Spaces being randomly removed etc.
Advertisements quite often cover postings making them unreadable.
You can't see who else is online.
It's just way behind the rest, where all the above comes as standard.

Martin.

Having in the past tried to write a website that was compatible with as many browsers as possible I found that most of the issues were with Internet Explorer. This was down to Microsoft being arrogant enough to ignore internationally agreed standards about how various issues should be implemented and displayed including such things as borders and spacing in tables. I don't suppose they've changed their attitude much in the meantime.

My point is that the lack of facilities here, coupled with the faults in formatting are largely not issues at other webites that I visit. Also, I believe IE9 will become the next standard - whether we like it or not - in the same way the other IEx's have been in the past.

You can post externally hosted images, just copy & past the url into the box that says "image url" Just like this, you will see I have no photos on this site

Thankfully the rest of the world does not agree with you for the reasons stated above about Microsoft's arrogance and consequently blighted, bloated and bug ridden products. I use Firefox on Linux and Safari on Apple's Leopard and this site causes me no problems. Both of these follow the published international standards which is maybe why they work. Crap software from Microsoft is not a reason to change the rest of the world, despite what Mr gates thinks.

Hello Martin!

I've been a professional in what used to be called informatics and one master rule in my profession was: never use a beta version for production and only use a new version after the release with at least a digit 1 after the first dot (e.g.: 9.1xxx). And any beta version should be tested only by a closed circle of people knowing very well the "internals" and functionality/features of the product with the objective of reporting the eventual bugs to be found.
Debugging software is not cheap. Unless You find volunteers to do it.
That's the reason why Microsoft delivers beta versions to some kind of audience.
And that's one of the reasons (not the greatest) Bill Gates and Microsoft are so wealthy and Microsoft so arrogant.

I for one don't support this way of producing software and I'm still using the IE version 7 but only when I find sites/pages specifically designed to work with IE.
The browser I use most is FireFox which respects international agreed standards.

So, agreeing with most of Your propositions, firstly I wish the software forum respects the international standards in order the rest of browsers can work fine.

I have one proposition to add to yours which is: the possibility of searching any string amongst the posts. I know it has performance costs for the forum system but also has great advantages.

Note: Meanwhile, until the question of attachments is not solved, I propose to You and all readers concerned with the same question of the perennial of pictures attached to messages to create a special album dedicated to storage that pictures.

Best regards
Dias Costa

Hello Martin and all.

Please discard my previous proposition as Mr. JasonB shows us a working, natural, solution not needing any contrivance.

Best regards

Hi Jason and Dias,

There can be a problem with some external image storage sites. If you upload new photographs to an album or rearrange the images, say to improve the sequence, it can alter the url of the image. This causes the awful 'Picture not Available' graphic on your posting and it cannot be edited to change the url.

Unfortunately the only safe way is to create an album on this site and upload images here.

Hi Blowlamp,

I agree about the lack of facilities here. I use the 9x20 lathe forum and find that there are lots of useful facilities such as the ability to upload files such as manuals and 'how to' guides for all to access easily. The only reason I use this site is the interesting posts from members which are on the whole extremely informative and useful.

Best regards

Terry

Hello Terry!

As You can see in one my previous posts I had just proposed the building of a new album to be exclusively used to contain pictures referred in posts while better and more practical solution is not found.

But, in face of the message of Mr. JasonB, I gave up of the mentioned proposal because, as Mr. JasonB showed, its way is far simpler than mine.

Best regards

Terry with the number of forums I post on it would take me all day to upload similar images to all of them.

I'm quite aware of the problems that altering image storage can cause and am very careful not to delete or move pictures so the original url is not lost.

The OP commented that if pics were deleted in the ME album they would disappear from posts, its the same case on externally hosted images. I was commenting on this statement "There's no way to include pictures in a post without creating an album" not about loosing images in posts. Although reading it again now it does seem like he wants to treat them as attachments

Hi Jason and Dias,

I wasn't saying that you shouldn't use an image hosting site, I do myself, but I meant that one had to be careful about using them and for one who only uses this site, that using an album here may be the best way to go. Sorry if I did not express myself clearly there was no criticism or contradiction intended

Jason I've sent you a PM.

Best regards

Terry.
