They say necessity is the mother of invention, this chap shows what can be done with basic tools and a will to get there. Accuracy not in the realms we expect but it gets the job done it seems. One has to respect the ingenuity involved.

Grizzly bear,

I'm left handed and curious as to why you mentioned it.

Martin,

I'm left handed, and notice other left handed people instantly.

I'm happy with it too.

Hi Martin / Grizzly, my younger brother is left handed and I've no problem with anyone who is. Always had to remember to put his knife & fork the other way round though, when it was my turn to lay the dinner table when we were kids.

Regards Nick.

Hi, that chuck is fascinating, looks like the lathe is made in a similar manner.

Regards Nick.

I am a lefty as well ha ha, we seem to have A Rash of them. Watching people make something out of nothing puts us all to shame and makes us realise where the innovators are to be found, The end result is as accurate as possible within the restrictions of the lathe. The saddle components appeared to be bouncing around a bit

Could I make a 4 jaw chuck, yes definitely, a 3 jaw would be a challenge though. Would I make a 4 jaw chuck absolutely notwink I have a very vague recollection of chuck making articles published in ME.

My blister is left-handed and manages well enough apart from scissors. But I'm wondering - how awkward is it for lefties to work in a right-handed workshop - my pillar drill, milling machine, and belt-sander all assume right-handed operators.

Is there any value is owning a left-handed lathe:

smalllathe.jpg

Why is it all cultures have considered left-handedness to be anti-social since time immemorial? In arabic šimāl means both "left hand" and "bad omen", while English is full of disparaging words like sinister, maladroit, and gauch. Right-handers get a much better press. Even the bible mentions 'the right hand of God'.

Alas humanity! We're capable of making others miserable because of ignorance, prejudice and mob behaviour. Shame on us all.

I've just had 10 days in hospital, and was surprised at the number of left handed doctors, nurses, and other medics.

PS There are a few things that I do better left handed than right

I did have a milling machine, a Dore Westbury, but a long while ago I made this Four jaw chuck from a steel billet a freind gave me when he gave me his home made barbells, so one end of the barbell became this.

Alan Jackson:

Your photo reminds me how useful it is to have tee slots on the four jaw, a feature often not found on the smaller hobby ones.

A friend gave me his weights which disappointingly turned out to consist of some kind of resin or concrete in plastic cases.
