My wife has inherited a few items from her late mother, which were her late father’s work. The Allchin is love steam and used to be certified, but as he passed some 25 years ago we’re assuming the certificate is long since expired. In addition to the engine and the other models she has inherited plans, books, some tooling (lathe chuck?) etc.

I have lots of pictures, but am not sure how to include them in this post.

Could anyone advise of possible value and how she is best selling these (neither she nor I have any interest in showing and don’t have the room to keep these items)?

Thanks in advance,
Rich

That Royal Chester is grand looking model and would do well in an auction house, with a reserve price, but there is likely to be 20% at least selling charge.
Perhaps you will get some offers from group members, maybe some silly offers so get it valued by someone with knowledge of the trade.

That is very clean work on those items.

I would expect that they would bring top value in that condition.

The machined surfaces can easily be buffed out to a bright condition again, but I would not recommend doing it unless you are familiar with the process.

I buffed the surfaces of my dad's engines, which had been sitting for a long time, and they all looked new again.

Thanks for the responses so far, I’ll get more details on the plans, books, tools, boxes of bits, lathe chuck, etc.

Have you got the boiler cert. Even tho it's expired it proves the boiler is old enough not to need CE mark. If not and father in law was a member of ME club they might have records.

Duncan

Is the CE mark still needed as we have left the EU ?

The boiler may need to be tested to a UK standard which will be different ?

As far as I know the requirements stay the same until our govt change them. CE mark is replaced by something else, but as the boiler is plainly more than 12 months old, I'd want to demonstrate it didn't need a CE mark. And if the requirements do change don't expect them to be relaxed.

I would happily I would bid £1500 for the plant and £3500 for the Allchin for two such fine items

I would initially try them on ebay with the above figures as your reserve price.

SRS are currently listing a comparable Allchin at £4750, but that comes with new certificates which enhances the price.

That is a honest valuation 👍so I would second that Bill! The Royal Chester is finely made, even the padlock! Err spare key anyone??

The CE mark and its associated paperwork was required only on boilers made professionally ("by way of trade" and after a certain date (I forget which now).

Otherwise, whoever made it, I see no reason for it not to be tested under the present MELG scheme (the white with orange print cover, book). If the original papers are missing, it would be tested as if a new boiler; and will want a "Written Scheme of Examination" that is primarily a tick-box description of the "pressure equipment".

Not though that although the test certificate is matched only to the boiler by its description and serial number, the WSE also identifies the owner, a point to consider in selling an engine. However, this should not present any real difficulties.

There's not many who can produce work of that quality, your wife should be very proud of her dads work.

Missed your reply Bill, I guess they only wanted to know what they had 'aquired'.

Apologies for not updating, the reason for that is there is no update, we are still spending a lot of time on the motorway between south and north as we prepare the house for sale. Am I permitted to post items here for sale?

Rich

On the right side of the screen you will see items for sale and wanted lists, add your For Sale items by going to CLASSIFIEDS on the top Menu bar and follow the links.
