But rather than receive a notification that there's a message, it would be far simpler if the message just arrived in my INBOX and to which I could reply by email.

Your view may differ!

With best wishes and thanks again.

I could not agree with you more - a nice simple solution

Does everybody know how to find messages sent to them? It would be a lot easier if they just arrived in one's email client!

...

Though they look similar Private Messages aren't emails. The word 'Private' reveals their main advantage. Only members can exchange PMs, and only the Forum administrator and addressees can read them.

PMs are much more contained than emails, which use a store and forward mechanism to route stuff across the many different servers and interconnected networks than comprise the internet. Store and forward means multiple copies are taken, and - even worse - the global nature of email means spam! On the plus side, email is more capable than PM because it allows attachments and other bells and whistles.

The software used by this forum isn't particularly friendly when it comes to PMs in that the facility is behind a menu (Inbox tab, top left) and not everyone realises it exists. When a PM is received the items ringed in red below flash, and the message ringed in blue appears in the Friends pane.

From the Inbox a tick box sends an email notification whenever a PM is received.

Dave

Thank you for taking the time to respond.

I have sent Bill ("br" three messages using this system and my SENT box tells me that he has NOT been able to read any of them!

I'm NOT very adept at all this computer stuff.

With best wishes and thanks again.

Sounds like you've cracked sending them MC, but Bill hasn't sussed out how to read PMs yet. Maybe Bill simply hasn't noticed the flashing - it's not obvious! I sometimes take a while to notice them. Or isn't logged in.

After logging in and seeing a message alert click on the Inbox and a list of messages should appear. Another twist, to open a message click on it's title, not on who sent it.

Dear Bill

I'm sending this in the open forum.

I was taught to be cautious at University so I have created a unique email address that you can contact me with.

It's me.forum@detectivewalks.co.uk

I received hundreds of spam messages so sending you one for you to contact me is a risk I'm prepared to take!

I look forward to hearing from you and thank you, in anticipation, for your interest.

I hope that you and your family are, and will remain, safe and well.

Yours very sincerely,

MC Black

Looks like Br has deleted the message sent to him without reading them from what I can see As his inbox is empty but there are showing in MCB's sent box as unread.

Sorry Brian but the problem(s) appear to all be you or your equipment. As I said I can replicate the messages not showing by logging in as you and deleting them. Also if I log in as you I can open your album page without a problem. Same for the photo problem the other day where you had the album marked private not public which was stopping people being able to see the image. You have also had problems asdding images in the past under one of your other user manes

We can only do so much at this end the rest is down to the user.

Jason, thanks reply

You are definitely more computer literate then me

Best to say a combination of my equipment and a thick user who is not a computer buff

Thanks for all your help - to be fair to you , can I just say you have always been most helpful and i send my sincere thanks.

Arthritis means no more workshop , so this is all saying to me, time to hang up my boots and log off before I am carried off

Wish you well

bill  user name initials  br or anything esle that I might have forgotten but Jason will know.

This problem with OFF LIST messages that "br" is experiencing confirm my long held belief that computers work by Witchcraft!

I have now received an email message from "br" and replied by email.

It's always sad when somebody gives up a long established hobby.

I hope that you and your families are, and will remain, safe and well.

Yours very sincerely,

MC

The tables above have been most usefull

Opened up a new box of Sherwood M5btaps, today, to find that they don't want to go into a 4.2 mm hole. Why? 5.25 mm diameter although marked 5 x 0.8! So look like being incorrectly marked 1BA!

May I ask the source of this data please?

It would be useful to have a laminated copy in my shed-workshop but I don't know how to print just the table.

Very many thanks in anticipation

Hi Howard, maybe they are 5mm taps for thread repair coils.

Yes of course ... it is the page which Nigel Graham 2 misquoted

... Please see Nigel’s post on page 2 of this thread ... which you have already questioned, and upon which I have already remarked.

Thank you for taking the time to respond.

I did NOT appreciate that the table came from Tubal Cain's book - I'll have to buy a copy.

With best wishes and thanks again.
