Evening all,

my J&S 540 has decided to go all British on me and is leaking.

It has a palin bearing head, and the the rear seals for the wheel headset I think the culprit.
Has anyone replaced these?

The parts manual is not much help - the front seal is 1” Oil Seal and the rear is 1 3/8” oil seal.

Dave

Hi,

the guys on the practical machinist abrasive forum are very helpful and knowledgeable if you don’t find the answer here. In the UK Andmar support these grinders and may be willing to offer you some advice.

If you can measure the shaft and housings, the seals will probably be standard lipseals, obtainable from a local bearing supplier., unless they are a special for the application.

It would be worthwhile to turn up some dollies for fitting the new seals, to minimise risk of damage. Lubricate the shaft before putting it through the seals, and wrap masking tape over any threads or keyways for reassembly. And don't touch the seal lips!

Stripping down and reassembling and resetting the machine is where you need to communicate with folk who are familiar with the machine.
