Having been doing even more pattern making over the last couple of weeks there is nothing wrong with working the brown stuff particularly if a pile of castings will be the end result.. The CNC makes a very good job of them, can't show the results yet as its hush-hush at the moment.

I have just seen an add On Amazon (Australia) for CNC routers and engravers which might be suitable for your grandson.

If you have a 3D printer they should come in at only a few hundred pounds.
I am not expecting to be able to machine metal with it, but I do think it will be a good introduction for me to learn a bit about CNC and a bit of fun.
