I phoned up my cousin yesterday evening, he is 86 and his wife is 68, they are both well living in a Hampshire village. Their son and daughter in law both have the virus, but thankfully their children do not. He had been working in London, commuting from Kent, he can, and is, working from home now. They are the only people that I know that have had the virus.

Its certainly a strange virus , my oldest son`s paternal grandfather ( from a previous relationship) was in the news having just recovered from covid 19 and returned home , he`s almost 72 and has had COPD for years and fibrosis of the lungs .

The pathogen is the same, but different bodies respond in different ways. Initial viral load and seat of infection will vary as will innate immune response and adaptive immune response. The big variable is the individual.

I fully agree that causing people to panic would be counter productive, it's bad enough now, but maybe if people realised that it isn't going to be like mild flu for a lot of us, they might take more heed of the need to the instructions to stay at home where possible. I for want do not want to scare anyone, but I would be very happy if I thought just one person read my earlier post and thought blimey, I am going to do more to avoid catching this damn virus.

To be completely honest I have my own theory that Boris and co have intentionally been infected now so that they can be treated and observed while there are resources available, this is just my own thought and I could of course be wrong.

The final graph is very impressive star

My positive feeling about South Korea’s approach seems justified.

I was most impressed by the South Korean Foreign Minister, on Andrew Marr’s show this morning.

HighTech connectivity being used there, for the global good.

Bojo isn't exactly an icon of male fitness and healthy living and he's apparently doing fine

So I wouldn't be too anxious

It does get about easily though

You only need to hang around an infected person for a relatively short time

On cruise ships, we can't just leave people all cooped up in massive disease incubators without access to proper treatment.

We need to treat people with as much humanity as we can muster, no one should be blamed for contracting the disease.

It doesn't take genius to come up with plans for bringing them ashore and quarantining them.

On the sky news tonight the guy said the words staying home for 6 months too many times for my liking. I was thinking 3 months tops, that's if I live through it. 6 Months . Should have bought more steel.

When they said 12 weeks I thought 6 mths. Now they say 6mths I'm expecting 18mths.
Just think of any gov project:

"It will take 3yrs and cost 30billion"
"The consultation process has been more complicated than originally thought. But will be completed on time and in budget in 4yrs and 40 billion"
""This department will take charge of reviewing costs, The project will be completed in 5yrs and withing budget because we had a contingency over-run of 10 billion so the 50billion costs is within budget"
"The project planner has resigned. The new planner states he can deliver this project within 6yrs but inflation has taken the costs to 75billion"
"This was always going to be a complex but essential project so delays and costs are acceptable in the interests of providing this infrastructure"
"Tenders for the project have come in at 100billion and from the start of construction to competion will be the 8yrs promised. It's just we start 3 years later than anticipated."
"We have spent 4 years and 40 billion on planning. Construction has started, Completion within 9yrs for another 100billion"

This mornings report on daughter upstairs, who has had the bug since last Tuesday.

Yesterday she felt worse and was a bit 'down'; more than just being fed-up with being locked in and poorly. Main symptoms aches, hot & cold, sleepy, mild headache (responds to Paracetamol), intermittent dry cough, and slept most of the day. (Previously watched a bit of TV and used her computer.) Ate normal meals.

This morning, refused breakfast and says she feels even worse. Just wants to sleep.

Not too worried because the cough is no worse - she has no trouble breathing. Despite being locked in the same house with an imitation Typhoid Mary I've still not caught it myself. Fingers crossed!

P.S. Too late to edit my previous post, so permit me to mention here

I’ve finally found a TEM image of SARS with a scale bar

[ Covid-19 will be of a similar size ]

https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/medicine-and-dentistry/coronaviridae

Edit: Before anyone questions my remark about size ...

The referenced document states :

The apparent size and shapes of coronaviruses can vary considerably. Coronavirus particles are basically spherical, although negatively stained air-dried particles are often pleomorphic. They usually have a diameter, excluding projections, of between 80 and 120 nm, although in extreme cases the diameter can vary between 60 and 220 nm.

Dave,

Hang in there and best wishes for you both. Keep these updates coming sow e all know how it's going for you and probably for us (sooner or later).
I'm sure you've looked up the durations of illness and incubation periods. It may be worth thinking about easy meals/fluids supplies in case there's some overlap if you have friends/relatives that can drop off supplies to your door - paracetamol supplies, bouillon cubes, instant soup, fruit juice, bedside kettle.

Stay well
