I don't have an optical centre punch, so obviously I don't use one. But neither do I miss one. I hardly ever mark out. Edge finders, DROs and 4-facet drills have pretty much made marking out redundant for my machining. I suspect I get better accuracy using the above as opposed to marking out.

The main exception to the above is sheet metalwork, to be done by hand, where I do mark out in the traditional way. If the marking out is done correctly there's no problem in aligning the centre punch by feel as it "picks up" the scribed lines.

Here’s the start of a four part video on making one. Make sure to look at the other three.

Followed JasonB's link for the Veritas, looks good and was USD48.50 so tried ebay dot fr where the same item was priced at eur1,298.00 from UK - hmm must be a typo, try ebay dot co.uk = GBP1,168 - I think not, thank you, it's for my Christmas present, not theirs . Will try some UK woodworking sites as JasonB suggests.

Standard e-bay practice when the seller is out of stock to save relisting the item, one here on uk e-bay at what looks like the right selling price but again no stock.

Amazon are also showing it as OS

George, strange, your link to Chronos showed out of stock but Jason's tip to search UK wood-working supplies found - Chronos ! - with Veritas optical centre finder ( same model shown that Jason linked to ) GBP38.64 incl + shipping. **LINK** scroll down the page.
Now we wait with anticipation for the tinkle of sleigh-bells as La Poste arrives...

OTOH, I've had problems in the past with The Chronos website claiming something is in stock, only to order and then receive an email a day or so later telling me it actually isn't (and with no available restock date at that).

Hopefully your experience will be better than mine.

Thanks - I spent some time trying to find ANY Optical Centre Punch in stock anywhere at a reasonable price - and failed.

I too have ordered this one and hope they are serious about having it in stock....

I've had en email from chester refunding my purchase and telling me that the device is no longer manufactured.

Which begs the question of how they managed to have it on their website for sale.
