I have been a subscriber to Model Engineers Workshop for some years, and in the past have used the classifieds but now it seems I have to post on the forum before I can make a post.

I have an old Portass lathe which I would like to sell any reasonable offer it is a project for someone. I also have a couple of myford bits to sell, I sold my ML7 some time ago and bought a Bantam.

I hope this post is enough to allow me to access the classifieds.

Phil

I have "signed up" so I can respond to an advert, but have to make a number of forum posts to be able to access contact details. How many posts are required?

How many posts are required before you can see contact details for an ad? I dont want to clog the Forum with redundant posts.

This seems like a great place to make a spurious post to be able to view the classifieds...

I have just logged on to the site to gain access to details of an item posted in the classified section. I find it strange that I have to post in the forums to gain access. You are required to log on to the site using a password so why so much red tape?

Because the site is primarily a forum for model engineers. The classifieds are a minor sideline for the benefit of members. They're not intended for people who have no interest in participating but simply want to grab something for themselves and run, never to be seen again.

Another question on classified ads I have been and looked at some just out of interest but find that you can not click on the pictures to enlarge them to see the item clearly. But you can use this feature to enlarge photos in other posts. Other than enlarging the screen is there not a way to allow a single click to enlarge them.

Also if like other sites it stops the people from just logging in and posting for sale items willy nilly which have nothing to do with engineering in this case

Well here I am again trying to get contact details of a member who has an item, advertised in the classifieds, that I wish to explore with the intention of possibly making the purchase. How many post do I have to write? Even the local newspaper includes contact details of items for sale. Very frustrated. I just hope the item is still for sale after I have passed the initiation test!

From the other side of the coin - member wants item; I have item; send email to member; no response, not even acknowledgement. Manners or the wonders of electronic communication??

Terry, you should be OK now.

The other main reason for having to make a couple of posts is that scammers are less likely to register and be able to make posts so that stops them getting to contact sellers. Since introducing this requirement the number of scams being reported has droppe right off.

Jack, when the automated e-mail message comes up make sure you don't delete the text that is already there otherwise the person won't be able to reply to you.

Thanks Jason - no text was deleted - the major problem is that the member only shows his forename and home city; no tel no., no username, no other way of making contact.
