Why do they even have the "search this site " panel for anyway ? I don't think it has found anything i was looking for ever !

I *think* that when it comes to forum posts, "search this site" searches only forum thread titles (not the body of the thread). It might be useful, on occasion by reducing 'noise'

The search at the top of each forum page does a literal search of thread titles. This means you have to put in something that exactly matches part of a thread title to find a match, so entering 'myford' or 'end mill' usually works.

I find it useful when a thread like 'what did you do today' slips off page 1 of the results.

The one on the home page does a google site search, and is much more powerful, but finds many more results, sometimes too many. Putting in '<username> album' can be useful.
