Plus one more. We are truly blessed in this country to have Police and Security Forces who put their lives on the line every day to ensure our safety.

Today one of these brave selfless individuals made the ultimate sacrifice. My heart and the hearts of all my family go out to that individuals family. The devotion to duty and the gallantry displayed by the Officer in question are truly humbling.

Senseless and such a waste of life in the name of religious fanaticism. I feel for all affected by this barbaric act. We must never let these idiots prevail.

Yes, its always the innocents that suffer unfortunately. If its somethinng to do with Islamic extremists, dont forget who went into the Middle East in the first place and wound them all up, Bush and our Tony !.

One year after the Brussels atacks again we are shocked by another barbaric act. Regardless of Brexit we as Europa must stay together and form one front against those very sick persons who do this. Niko.

Sympathy & condolences to all those affected; all this from a religion professing ... according to the Qur'an...love, equality & the religion of peace, it's hard to not be sceptical, cynical.

Yes, a pointless loss of life.

I'd like to further extend my sympathy to the people in other countries that suffer day in and day out from the mindless bombing, shelling & drone attacks which are instigated, funded & coordinated by democratic, peace-loving governments. sad

If the money spent on weapons were employed for peaceful purposes I wonder where we as a species would be. Surely all that development resource would have addressed so many of our current issues. When America developed the atomic bomb didn't they use more Engineering might than the entire motor industry would have done in its history.
Swords into plough shares would be wonderful.

I feel very sorry for the victims and their folk and hope the injured recover ASAP. However, am I the only one on here who feels the need to bite one's tongue when it comes to suggesting how these criminals and their "supporters" could be reigned in? Or is that racist?

I have some Muslim friends and they are disgusted by the use of Islam to fuel terrorism! Religion has nothing to do with these atrocities.

My condolences got out to the families of the victims and to the injured.

We live in the most religious free country in the world but sadly sometimes we have to a terrible price for this. But I wouldn't want to live in any other country.

Part of the problem is that the enclaves of extremists might not always belong to a race but a religion, and anyone could be a part of that.

I'm confident that the services did their part and what they could to protect us, and i'm sure they don't stray from arresting an individual if they are seen to pose a tangible threat to public safety.

But they aren't almighty so unfortunately those who do, can slip through the net and get riled up and lash out when they get the chance to, at people who might have nothing to do with what they're angry about.

I feel as though you could treat these perpetrators as being obviously mentally deficient, not dealing with their emotions healthily and leading a bizzare life. Perhaps this is an area where some social support could do well.

But i'm certain bloodshed will end in bloodshed, and leading to drastic decisions or solutions will be painful for everyone. They prey on our assumptions and want to play that up, if we look at this objectively and look for rational and sensible solutions we can beat them. They must be held account for what they've done, but we should never be as barbaric as they choose to be.

Just remember that the biggest shame you can bring to them, is not to kill them, because they intended their death. But to bring them up before a court of law and charge them for what they've done and imprison them. Then they must face reality and not hide cowardly in the grave, never should they be martyred. That is to spit in their eye. They must be confronted in a way to show them their utter futility and let their burning doctrine snuff out with that, that cadre is dead and they know it, they are panicking now.

A brief R.I.P for those people cruelly taken from the world and hurt and distressed as well.

I don't think these people are a different race, just that some come from other parts of the world.

Maybe the need to reign them in from their activities over here would disappear if their home countries weren't under ongoing bombardment by our government & its allies.

Martin.

Sorry but this piece of human scum was born in this country. He has no connection with the countries spoken of as being under attack by this country. Don't delude yourself that this man was avenging his people. He murdered innocent people on the street not combatants in a war. Do not make excuses for these terrorists they are criminals not hero's of their cause.

No one yet knows the attacker's motives or connections, but nevertheless, please read this article and tell me what kind of people make things like this happen.

I fully agree with Michael W's last two paragraphs.

It must be remembered that extremism is not confined to Islam. Both Christianity and Hinduism have extremists and they have done plenty to stoke up the current situation. The frightening thing is that there is absolutely no rational logic behind their ideas. Earlier terrorism, such as in Ireland, had understandable aims with leaders who were prepared to negotiate.

Rereading this I realise that the last sentence may be politically "loaded". However I have decided not to remove it.
