I've got a US keyboard, Changed it many times but always US on start up, given up now and just accept it. Trying to get further into this I find that my UK keyboard has " migrated", also my printer, where to is not stated.

When you install the UK layout, uninstall the US one.

I don't think Microsoft can like me as they never seem to send me anything, I use Linux for 99% of my tasks but bought a Dell laptop to run my Garmin software etc and to use away from home, I bought it second hand from a computer shop with W7 on, but as I had never used anything newer than XP I upgraded it to W10 last May when it was free, it's now running W10 Home version 1511 and although I have used it quite a bit recently as far as I am aware I have never had any updates at all.

Shouldn't be necessary. On the Win 10 partition of my laptop I have three language/keyboard settings set up;

English (UK)/ French keyboard

English (UK)/ UK keyboard

Français(France)/ French keyboard

I can switch between them with the Windows key/spacebar combination and it still works after today's updates.

Russell.

Unlikely that you'd know unless you went looking. With Win-10 they don't ask - they just do it.

Yes it's always used on the internet, I only use it for going on the WWW, there's nothing I do with it that's off line at all.

Things now have gotten worse. After I post my message last night I got a notification that my computers needed a restart. So duly shut down the applications that run 24/7 and restarted the computers. The laptop restarted first and I found it would not accept my password, whilst I was trying work out what was going on my desktop computer had restarted and it was asking to be logged in, which was strange because it was set up to start with logging in. It dawned on that the update had changed the signing in to my Microsoft Account and not local logging in set up.

This would not matter much except that my Microsoft account was set up using email address of my previous ISP which means I can't receive verification codes to change passwords etc, and In Microsoft account you cannot change the email address. Arrrgggghhh !!

Regards Luigi

On the last Win10 update, about a week ago, it managed to stop Norton AV working. Giving error code 8504,104

Have uninstalled it, and installed a new one. Got the headache, free download!

Regards, Bear..

Why are we all accepting this stuff from windows ? I've had lots of help and advice but I don't understand most of it. I'm going to have to pay to get this machine fixed, and no doubt it will start again. We would not accept this from any other supplier.

I wouldn't worry about losing Norton as its reputation is not great.
However as many Linux users point out Microsoft has a 30 year reputation for sleazy practices - why do you think they have changed now?

The update to windows broke Flight simulator X , so I finally got around to have a go at fixing it and stuck the disks in and reinstalled it, Fine worked okay, following night switched notebook on and whoa a blue screen announcing "Error Code: 0xc0000034 in Windows 10 - Boot Configuration Data file missing required information"

Mmm tried to repair windows which threw up 'couldn't continue' so out comes my pen drive with a live copy of Linux and have a look at the file system, both disks were unmounted. A quick look on the net and there have been loads of people suffering the same or very similar problem's.

Most suggested a clean install of Windows 10 and just accept the loss of data. I removed the SSD drive which is just used as a cache, copied all the data from the C disk using the live Linux to another external drive and then attempted to fix the laptop, I did succeed to get it working but found that the flight sim folder seemed to have disappeared along with the boot configuration files.

But it worked! but much slower, before it booted up in about 30 seconds, with the fix it took up to two minutes or longer and started randomly with either of the two accounts I had on it.

Then last Saturday evening, as many others have reported the fix failed and up came the BCD error again.

I then reformatted both drives and reloaded windows.

The godsend is live Linux, I once 'rescued' a former employers computer with Linux after he loaded a dodgy 'free' office program! I then taught him how to make backups as he had all his business on one hard drive with no backups!

Microsoft have seen the success of Google and are trying to turn their operating system into something along the lines of android that along with the drive to control what you can load onto your computer, my HP notebook has windows 8.1 embedded in the bios!

My old dell laptop runs Linux and has done so for a long time without any problems.

I note that our latest world beater super hospital still shows Windows XP Professional on its computer screens!!!!

It wasn't that long ago I was at a railwyay station and the train arrivals screen was showing, if not this, something very similar:

When I read this column about Windows and constant problems I am glad that four years ago I took the liberating step of buying an IMac and ditching Windows, what a difference it made no more computer or software problems. Apple systems are a world apart from Microsoft, I can hand on heart say that since I unpacked my IMac it has been trouble free, recommend anyone to take the plunge and change, no connection with Apple just a very satisfied user.

Where are these WIN10 problems? "Updates" notify themeselves and the laptop proceeds to take them forwards, starting and restarting as required. When done all runs without hesitation. Just need to check the Cortana type questions etc.

Apple has its moments too. The latest ios update now requires that instead of swiping to get to the security login screen you have to press the Home button (often twice). That button is arguably the least reliable component of an ipad/pod/phone. (At least judged by ads for used devices on Craigslist/Kijiji where its not uncommon to see "Home button doesn't work but ...... "   ). Now Apple has increased its usage significantly. Oh well, I guess you can always buy another iPad if it fails.

On my regular-size iPad, I'm resisting the update but Apple is nagging me to death .....

In reply to Bandersnatch and his comments I did refer to an IMac, a proper computer, not an iPad or iPhone, there is a difference, the IMac is much more stable.
