Thread: Facing bar ends parallel on the lathe.

Thanks for replies. I understand that milling is the 'natural' technique for making the ends of a bar parallel, but for various reasons it's not an option here.

Several good ideas for doing it on the lathe though - I'll experiment. I think Martin's / Gray's suggestions of turning between centres will be the first experiment - it's a technique I've never used, so it'll be fun and seems to be guaranteed to work - provided the lathe's set up correctly of course!

Posting on your ‘faceplate’ thread this morning reminded me to mention this ...

For best results when turning between centres, you will [obviously ?] need to switch the workpiece end-for-end, rather than changing tools and saddle position. ... You want both faces to end-up either flat or very slightly concave.

MichaelG.

This is true. yes

I'll add that for supreme accuracy, be sure that the heastock centre is running true, and if it isn't, then give it a skim in position to make it so.

I'm looking at a job that's just come in to make an embossing stamp to recreate an old "Leatheries" bicycle saddle.

I'll certainly need to use a VCarve strategy to give the right form to the letters and other shapes.

Before cleaning up the machine from cutting the 11 remaining spokes there was one other little item that I have had drawn out for a while. Originally intended to cut from some wood grain UPVC facia so that the lettering showed up white on the darker material but did not have any off cuts wide enough so I decided to make it from some 6mm melamine coated MDF.

Pleased with how it turned out particularly the engraving as it was the first time I had tried that and pleased with the "square" ends to the numbers rather than rounded that you often see, F360 works out the magic and lifts the 90deg vee tool at the ends though it did have a strange way of doing the rounded parts of the numbers such as 6 & 9 first?

I actually mucked up the first one having also entered the 5000rpm spindle speed as the feed rate giving 5000mm/min so the order of cutting is not really right. It should have been hole with the 6mm cutter then engrave and chamfer with the 90deg chamfer mill. Now I can get rid of the wooden rack the original 1-10 set cam in and the boxes from the ARC half mm and imperial ones.

I've not tried engraving in Fusion 360, but it seems that you've VCarved the numbers. It's a very handy tool to have for making pro-looking nameplates & what have you.

It looks similar to a Sharp in concept.

Martin you came in while I was writing,

I would simply rough out somewhere near size and centre each end with a protected, or recessed centre. Drill and tap at one of the mounting holes on each face for a driver peg. Then mount the work between centres to take a light skim down each face and over the O/D if desired.

This does assume that the lathe is already set-up correctly.

Regards

Gray,

Edited By Graham Meek on 08/08/2020 11:26:09

Agreed, Graham.

If a fairly large central relief can be made at each end, which leaves a face of sufficient size for its intended purpose, then a much smaller area will need facing and the concave/convex facing issue becomes almost irrelevant.

Martin.

Turn it between centres and both faces will be parallel with each other.

Face the tailstock end first, remove part from lathe, refit back between centres with faced end now located at headstock. Face the tailstock end. Job done.

Which appears to be contradicted by the following sentence about having a Super 7 but fearing it is too small.

Hence the confusion that triggered the abuse at those attempting to help.

About as easy to comprehend as alien DNA.

Edited By Hopper on 04/08/2020 10:41:19

There is no confusion. You've just got to understand that " but I don't have a working lathe " means that his lathe doesn't work at the moment and that's why he is asking for help.

Is your face mask steaming up your glasses or something?

I need to make the above riser for my Mill - I have the mat'l: 6" diameter EN3 bar, but I don't have a working lathe (Super 7 might be a bit small anyway for an inexperienced turner).

I have a drawing but want to confirm register sizes and pcd of the 3 stud holes when I dismantle

Is there anyone in the East Midlands can help me with this (or know anyone who can)?

Thanks

Dave

It would seem comprehension levels are still down today.

For anyone open to another view. This is what front line doctors think:

...

Bwahaha. That's the same doctor who says modern medicines contain alien DNA. A real reliable source for sure.

Which one of those doctors?

Be honest, you haven't watched the video have you?

I have - it's carp. They should be struck off. Early on Dr. Stella Immanuel explains how the effect Hydroxychloroquine has on hiccups proves the drug is effective against Covid-19. Seriously flawed logic.

"America's Frontline Doctors" are a right-wing group not frontline doctors! Members have controversial political and personal views. The main medical agenda of the group is promotion of the anti-malarial drug Hydroxychloroquine, prices of which rocketed after being recommended by President Trump.

Unfortunately Hydroxychloroquine since been shown to have no beneficial effect on Covid-19 patients. The UK's Recovery Trial (1542 patients given the drug) concluded:

'The results showed 25.7% of people taking hydroxychloroquine had died after 28 days. This compared with 23.5% who were given standard hospital treatment.'

Not all doctors are trustworthy. I'd cheerfully leave this lot to the tender care of Dr Harold Shipman!

That's why it got taken down from social media days ago.

You think censoring doctors with real-world experience is the right thing to do?

This thread is more frightening than any virus - the complete lack of ability for anyone to be inquisitive about what's happening is appauling. You'll be wearing wellies to the shops if you're told to, won't you?

Real world experience of alien DNA?

Which doctor? Evidence please, or you're making it up.

Have you got a rotary table for your mill?

It might be possible to use one to make this part.
