Thread: Gear hobbing
01/03/2022 09:38:43

Pete, It’s a mikron 92 with a standard head. Bought it for £100 many years ago and overhauled it that was almost a waste of time as couldn’t find anything wrong with it and it’s been working ever since. I mostly cut gears for mechanical instruments (speedometers and rev counters) with it but have got a couple of 20dp hobs so I can generate odd changewheels for the machine itself which I converted to use Myford style wheels.

Roger, It’ll be interesting to see that it could spark a bit of interest as very little out there except cues and small mikron machines like mine ,best of luck..

If you make the GHT stamp holder the stamps are are pushed to one corner of the holder by leaf springs and as usual with GHTs designs it works!!

I bought a set of 1 mm from Pryor a couple of years ago as they assured me that the characters were absolutely central and they are, worth the extra few quid.

BASS 66 nearly all the fasteners I make are for Pre 30s bikes and I screwcut most of them much better looking totally concentric with plain sections etc.

The item attached to the vertical slide is a Changewheel dividing unit which is why you do not get rid of changewheels!!!

25/02/2022 13:13:01

+ 1 for that if you haven’t got it you can’t use it and as for changewheels NEVER part with them!

Thread: Gear hobbing
24/02/2022 16:24:02

No definitely not but if it helps over the years I’ve had my hobber I have slowly worked out a change wheel chart based on available change wheels (converted the machine to 20dp Myford type which were cheap as chips then. As you say your fixed ratio is 40 to 1, mine is 16 to 1 so to cut a 10 tooth gear it’s 10 div 16 = 0.625 which I achieve by using a 48 and 30 tooth wheel setup. For some tooth counts compound trains are necessary but I shy away from them unless really necessary. Hope this is some help

Make one, use 3 or4 mm silver steel drill 1.5mm dia for. A short distance then turn bevel to give sharp edge (wad cutter style). Then mill or grind 90deg window from cutting edge for a short distance ,harden and temper and your good to go. They are much easier to control when used if put in the drill press chuck. Good luck

Thread: NT VFD control legend meaning
23/02/2022 16:34:51

I’m with Martin on this, when I fitted my NT set up they said only use in the red for short periods so most of the time now I just select backgear for the short period of work (screwcutting as an example) then the vid comes into its own as it then needs to run the motor at a higher rpm

You could sell the gearbox for a nice tidy sum and use the proceeds to fit inverter vid system.

Thread: Always confused over threads and tapping
21/02/2022 19:24:26

I really have problem with this discussion as some of you are actually looking to mismatch fasteners, why do you think the designers of these fittings made both parts match..I could not in all honesty make stainless or any other material fasteners that did not match. Let’s be fair all the information required for thread sizes /rates /tapping sizes/ clearance/ and ods in the case of numbers is all out there pull it off print and read it.If a jobs worth doing.!!
