Thread: Bernard Towers' Lantern Chuck

sorry Richard but the 1.2 dimension does not appear on my original drawing. the mix of dims are there to enable people to imagine the sizes as some people think in imperial and some in metric. It looks like you have made a good job of it and I hope it gives you pleasure using it. Try putting your screws in with tweezers.

Thread: Which type/brand of razor blades stay sharp longest? (cutting card/greyboard)
29/04/2021 13:58:18

The ones that stay sharp the longest are the ones that don’t get used!!

Thread: Cutting Knurling tool.
26/04/2021 19:37:57

I built one in the recent past from an article and it must be MEW as its the only one I take but had lots of trouble getting it to work so made the super Hemingway one brilliant and repeatable results.

Thread: Four facet drill grinding.
26/04/2021 17:14:27

DAG Brown has done articles in the past but there is one in ME Jan/Feb 1995 by Roland Gyllander from Sweden. i have made his jig but found it susceptible to variable hand pressure so have adapted it to fit directly on the T and C table removing the variable hand pressure problem. I have made a start on a article for MEW about the adaption but not finished yet! and sometimes think people have had enough of four facet articles. if interested drop me a PM

Thread: Drilled Hole Tolerances

sorry Howard but my experience of Dormer drills is very variable, some are good others are b awful, very obvious when put on my cutter grinder jig.

Thread: Bernard Towers' Lantern Chuck
24/04/2021 18:58:26

drawing in issue 303 has a mistake . the dimension for screw cutting the internal thread on the lantern screw should read 0.710 screwcut 32TPI. to be a close fit on thread on body. Hope neil sees this as it needs to be noted in the mag.

Thread: Snapping taps
21/04/2021 23:25:10

I’m with Rod spiral point or spiral flute both types have front geometry that is different to conventional 1 2. 3 taps. The angles at the front of the tap are such that the cutting load is greatly reduced, that’s why industry uses them ( less breakages)

Thread: Mitutoyo Spring Promotion

Beware the callipers are or seem to be metric only!!

Thread: Pins for a knurling tool - how hard should they be?
18/04/2021 12:38:20

If you have the wheels make a clamp type tool , much more predictable/ repeatable and definitely kinder to your machine

Thread: Milling machine thoughts?
06/04/2021 22:50:31

As I cannot tilt my millhead so therefore tilt my work I would think must be easier when you think of the number of times you use the mill in standard mode compared to tilted, then with the added complication of tramming to set it back to vertical.

Thread: Steel type(s) used in mnfr of Hydraulic Cylinder shafts
31/03/2021 23:47:00

Not absolutely sure but think it might be EN8 but might be an idea to contact a hydraulic company which could give you contacts to manufacturers.

Thread: Taps with plus sizes?
