Thread: model carry/storage box
08/12/2013 13:23:59

Thanks Ian

I Have the general shape and size in my mind, its just the Ironwork that I am a bit worried about.

I don't want to pin 4sides together and the bottom falls out, but on the other hand, I want to pick it up so I don't want overkill..

I need to take a camera to the next exhibition and search out some 2 1/2" stuff.

I am coming to the completion of my 2 1/2" gauge loco. What I need now is a carry box for it and its tender.

I wonder if their is a good place for designs for this type of box. I can work from a photo

Thread: How square should square barstock be?

you don't get much choice in this modern high tec world. Its not an English company that rolled it, so you have little chance to complain. Your local supplier is unlikely to be very helpful either. his margins are small.

Thread: Which mill
07/12/2013 09:42:16

I started of with a Warco minor mill. Second hand and cheap. Did some really good work on it, but found it really frustrating with only a downfeed on the quill. Sometimes it would move the correct amount, sometimes not. Then the next cut after measuring would take the cut and the bit it wouldn't drop and cut undersize. For the money and the tech support Warco gave me, I was generally pleased with the machine.

on a beginners machine, I would suggest a better second hand machine with anything but an MT2 taper to hold the tooling and that the table rises instead of having to make cuts using the quill.

A milling machine is a huge investment in a workshop and it takes tons of room, so don't jump in too quickly

Thread: Surface grinding - Coolant Queries
07/12/2013 09:29:58

Standard water soluble coolant as used in the lathe will clog the grinding wheel and should not be used.

grinding coolant has one other major benefit other that keeping work cool, it contains the dust produced and is far healthier option for the lungs.

Thread: How square should square barstock be?

yes, the section is wrong and we have for some time had to grin and bear the rubbish that is imported into this country, because we have no other choice.

But the question I have I. What job have you got lined up for the stainless that needs all 4 square edges.

I have some stuff like yours and had it for years, but I have not been caught out so far
