Thread: A sticky Mercer Gauge

I don't know whether he covers this exact topic, but Doubleboost on YouTube has a series called Dti Care and Repair with Bob which might be of help.

Thread: Gib missalignment
24/03/2022 10:54:14

The problem with my gib with spherical end screws arose because the dimples are too shallow and the contact was assymetric, forcing the gib into two lines of contact. The points are a bodge of course, a smaller radius hardened tip would be better but I just wanted to get the job done in a hurry. A better solution would be to drill the holes deeper to ensure symetrical contact with the original spherical tip, but setting up to drill accurately might be a pain.

I second what MikeK has said. I've just been through this with my X2. I machined the gib screws to a point which improved things a lot.

Thread: Fusion360 tutorials
06/01/2022 19:13:52

Thanks Emgee for reminding me about the manufacturer's documentation, I've actually used it a couple of times to date. Having had another look it's better than I had realised, especially the embedded video tutorials. I've just spent a happy hour or two learning more about constraints.

The problem I have Henry is getting stuff to stick in my old brain. It helps now that I have a second screen on my PC so I can keep reference/tutorial material open at the same time as Fusion 360 so that I can more easily go back to remind myself again about what I've already forgotten! I've been using Paul McWhorter's videos and they've been very useful as a starter. Continual product updates to user interfaces is a modern curse unless you are selling training.

Thanks chaps. I can stretch to the cardartifex book fortunately. At the moment the only place in the UK selling the new 5th edition is Amazon, which I refuse to use, but I will pick up a copy when there is an alternative source. Thanks again.

Has anyone on the forum bought a book on Fusion360 recently which they could recommend to a beginner to 3D CAD? I know about the online resources but I like to have a textbook or two about subjects new to me to relieve the tedium of online reading sometimes. Anything before 2020 I believe will be out of date because of modifications to the user interface. Thanks in advance.

Thread: Fitting DRO to a mini mill
28/07/2021 18:54:09

Judging by Sealey's web site your mill is the same model as my Sieg X2 Axminster version. I have a capacitative scale fitted across the front the table, it's never been any trouble. Many years ago I bought some drawings off the Internet to save time designing a mounting arrangement from scratch but I've no idea where they are now unfortunately. If you want some pictures of the installation pm me. Roy

With some trepidation I ask, have you put the power supply links between the USB section and the main board in place? Roy

10/07/2021 14:53:37

John, sorry to hear the troubles you are having. The approach I took to building the system, which worked first time, was to start with the components on the bench connected directly to one-another, this eliminates the considerable uncertainty introduced by connectors. Build the system up step-by-step, e.g. start with Launchpad powered by the USB (and everything else disconnected) and do the download, then add the boost board, then the Lauchpad external PSU and other components incrementally. Maybe this is what you have done in which case apologies. Make sure the Launchpad switches are set correctly. Also, be very careful with the download, it can look as if it's worked when it hasn't. When cabling the system up in its final packaging with connectors, check continuity of individual signals end-to-end with a meter as you go. Check and recheck that power supply polarities are correct! It's a pernickety business but you'll be delighted when it's running. Hope this helps, Roy

Thread: Open Technology Lathe Idea

I've come across some daft stuff on the Internet but a thread discussing a video we aren't allowed to watch is right up there with the best!

Thread: How do I remove this small bearing? And the one behind it.
09/04/2021 13:37:15

Heat is usually the answer for bearings in aluminium housings. Get the housing good and hot (a heat gun should do) and the bearings may well drop out. If not, try again with a piece of wood wedged into each inner race in turn so you can give them a bit of help. If the wood won't grip enough then make an expanding mandrel. Roy

Thread: Aldi Scheppach bandsaw

Thanks for the replies. I may well take a punt at that price.

Is the Aldi saw the same as the one they were selling in the autumn?

Thread: Yet another scam lathe sale on ebay to be aware of
09/01/2021 14:44:36

Listing says it's a book under Condition, and seller's name and address is included at the end. I'm looking at the desktop site, not the mobile one.

Thread: Electronic Lead Screw Project

Difficult to imagine how this could be caused by the electronics. As Tony says, more likely to be a mechanical issue, e.g. pulley loose on shaft.

Thread: Plans for updating the archaic forum?
11/11/2020 11:30:41

What I would say is, be careful what you wish for. There are some ghastly ME forum formats out there. This one is fine for me, but I suppose it will eventually become unsupportable and be superceded by something quite possibly worse as seems to be the norm nowadays.

Thread: Electronic Lead Screw Project
03/11/2020 19:20:02

Hi Tony, I tried Cat5 cable as suggested on this forum but it performed worse than the screened cable I had previously tested. My control panel is housed in a die cast box so I was able to connect it to earth as well via the screen and it helped. However, I couldn't get the noise down to zero (a glitch every few hours) which is why I was forced to implement the changes to the original software release I have mentioned previously. James has now implemented these changes and more. I regard them as essential for safety. Roy

18/10/2020 12:54:24

James has just released another video describing his software modifications. He does now disable all buttons except feed rate settings while the spindle is turning, with a configuration option to disable the latter also. Time to replace my version.

Oh, I must have misunderstood what he said in his description of the changes. I must have a look at his code. Roy
