Thread: New tool post for my lathe
03/10/2019 11:01:01

Hi all

does any one know if it is possible to buy a better tool post for the machine mart CL430 metal working lathe or do you have to stick with the tool post that come with the lathe at purchase

I would really like to change to a better and maybe a quick release post if possible but confused as what to buy , I get my stuff from usually but don’t know which way to go if any

Thread: machine mart CL oil level sight glass
15/08/2018 11:51:58

Good morning all, well I have just had a lengthy conversation with machine mart who now say that there has been a big mistake made on their side ,they said that the person who told me the size had altered was ill informed and gave me the wrong info and sent out the wrong sight glass ,they are going to send me 2 new sight glasses free of charge but will take 10 days to get to me , the size is the same now as the original and the bloke I spoke to was full of apologies,so the first bloke I spoke to was full of crap ,I’m just glad that I didn’t drill and re tap the hole to accommodate the glass that I was sent to me , what I don’t understand the part that I was sent the wrong one has the same part number

14/08/2018 12:48:48

Hi , I have ordered and received 2 new sight glasses but machine mart have changed the size of the original to a bigger glass it’s still the same part number but bigger than original so I am going to gave to drill and rethread or helicoil for the new one to fit. My tap and die set and helicoil goes up to M12 and it’s much bigger than M12

Thread: Cutters

Bought some tool steel of eBay cheap as chips ,I sharpen my own chisles knifes gouges etc so I should be ok it will be a learning curve and it won’t hurt to learn.

Thread: Clarke CL430 Metal Lathe
26/07/2018 12:20:30

A big whoopee, would have loved to seen the smile on my face when I put it all back together and it worked , every nut bolt cog belt etc removed clean and put back ,new belts on, now I know how my lathe is built and understand how it works ,it’s now back to how it was as it left the factory ,don’t really know what was up with it maybe something was slack out of adjustment or stuck but I now know how to deal with it in future , I have not touched set up for screw cutting YET ,just got to replace oil when new sight glass arrives , now I will start on a few simple projects and as I have not used the screw set up yet I think 1st project will be a fancy die holder with morse taper

Thread: Cutters
26/07/2018 10:16:10

Hi ,some very useful info received thank you , my main hobby is wood turning and I do admit I sharpen and hone all my own chisles I have a grinder a Tormek system and a Robert Sorby pro edge delux sytem I have to say the SB Pro Edge is my preferred method of sharpening my chisles ,I have created a account with Arc Euro trade and will have a look what’s available

26/07/2018 08:45:30

Hi , I have been looking at buying some cutters for metal turning and there is some rubbish looking ones out there ,I know that most people buy tool steel and grind their own but where can a newby buy decent cutters for my lathe ,my main hobby is wood turning and the same apples to having good chisels rather than cheap nasty ones so my question is where can I buy good cutters from?

Thread: Clarke CL430 Metal Lathe
24/07/2018 20:09:03

Well I have fixed it and it runs perfectly ,don’t ask me what was wrong with it cos I don’t know ,I took the advise of a chap on here and strip it down every screw nut bolt I could find cleaned and put it back together eventually ,if nothing else comes out of this I have learnt a lot about my lathe it’s workings ect and it’s had a good clean ,all I need to do now is replace the oil level sight glass but that had to be ordered 10 day delivery and make a pin for the collar on lead screw ,now I think it’s about time I started to use the lathe to make things instead of repairs for other things ,thanks for all the help tips and advise

Thanks for the offer mate I’m at junction 31 or 32 m62 ,I will let you know how it goes

24/07/2018 11:41:06

Thanks Mick I can work from that , we have had a big clear out at Home and I can’t find manual anywhere but I have a downloaded one and assuming I have the right one ,thanks again mate

24/07/2018 11:20:19

Mick could I ask a favour ,I have removed the belt pulley of the motor and like nob I have forgot which way it go back on ,could you send me a picture of yours please ,I have got it going now ,I tested it on full speed and the saddle fly over from tail to head stock in a flash but I’m struggling get it back to run at slowest speed I have 2 sets of belts 1 set is new but it’s as if the belts are to small but they are genuine belts

Thanks Brian ( should have said in early posts that I have had this lathe quite a while but never used it but now I would like to learn ,I have learnt a lot in the last few days )

24/07/2018 11:04:09

Hi Mick I’m in Pontefract West Yorkshire

24/07/2018 09:08:25

Hi , I have put new belts on set to what I think is slowest speed then done a speed travel test it took 45 seconds to travel 3 inches it also traveled under load , it seems ok but fingers crossed

23/07/2018 20:11:58

Hi Les, yes it does go about same speed

23/07/2018 19:56:48

When the auto feed is set to on the lead screw and the manual feed handle does rotate but the saddle moves slowly ,if I turn auto feed off and turn the handle myself the saddle moves fast if I turn it fast and slow if I turn handle slow

23/07/2018 18:23:25

I can move the saddle/carriage by using manual feed handle ,I’m at a loss here because there is no reason why it won’t move auto as it should that I can see but I don’t know what I am looking at ,going to see if I can get a service engineer out if possible

23/07/2018 16:48:53

Got the pin out ,separated the lead screw bar from where it was connected to ,nothing broke in there cleaned and reconnected reassembled ,not sure about the dog clutch as I don’t know what or where it is so I will live with it being manual

22/07/2018 22:07:46

Hi , I have now tried everything and tried the motor off leadscrew on and could not turn the wheel , when I run the lathe the screw turns and all the cogs turn ,on saying that I can not get the pin out in collar on leadscrew but will try again tomorrow , off to machine mart tomorrow for a air line see what they say

22/07/2018 17:04:04

Well I have stripped every thing down as far as I can ,sprayed degreaser every where to clean while striped reassembled and it sort of works I say sort of because it seems to travel slower than it did before even on fast setting

While testing I noticed oil leaking out of sight glass so silly me put a spanner on it and it broke the sight glass does look like a spanner would fit but if broke drill it out and helicoiled it ,seems to work ,checked price of a new lathe £1100 or £700 for a smaller one , my old lathe does not work so if need be I will use the travel on manual

Got there in the end so thanks guys
