if your buying off ebay ask if you can look it over first if you win look for any play in the head make sure all the teeth are not broken off any were I brought a lovely little lathe then got it home and found a lot of play in the head I adjusted all I could that took a lot of the play out but found out it needed a new set of bushes that as now gone and looking for something better now I am going to look at an Atlas lathe soon he wants £150 for it. It looks to be in great condition the bed looks good and there's no play in the head it will need a lick of paint but looks like its all there ATB Phil.

he as two other lathes that he is keeping I have seen this lathe running and cutting everything seems to be in very good order all gears on head stock seem to have all there teeth nothing looks missing from what I can see there is a big yellow box full of bits and a bag with gears in it there are gears fitted to the machine all gear guards seem to be there. Even the thread dial counter is there its a Atlas sphere model and looks the same as this on

With the cutter you are using, and assuming the end of the bar is squarely faced, move the tool in front of the bar(lathe stopped), and square the two against each other, no fishtail or square needed, takes about 10 seconds.

My recommendation is use HSS, learn to grind your own.

Ian S C

cheers will try that out thanks

11/03/2017 08:55:38

one problem I had was the cutter the tip was small and had trouble using the fish tail is there another way to set it up so its straight ?

its 20 tpi same as gun barrel

.

If you are talking about a sound moderator on a small caliber rifle yes many are 1/2" x 20 (though a small number are metric)

Hope you dialed the bore in and not the outside diameter. - The bore is seldom in the middle. frown

Nick

hi yes I hope to thread my own barrels one day when I get the hang of it lol

Where in the country are you ? If they are not overly hard someone close by should be able to help. I am in the Midlands close to Lichfield. I live in Rugeley so not to far from u I don't think the holders are made from hard metal but the inserts that go into the ends are they are same as these the two boring bars are ok as they sit 2mm under centre so can be shimmed up but the other 5 need 4mm skimming of bottom to 8mm
