Thread: boiler making

Thanks . that Polly site is useful

When soldering boiler components together I understand that I must leave space for the silver solder to run . Thing is , how much space ? tubes a push fit , slack fit ? End plates the same ? You cant measure the gap round a 5/16 tube When I worked in saw mills we jointed wide bandsaws with silver solder strip , but clamped the blade scarf joint very tightly together . A guide would be appreciated

Thread: bronze or brass

I am pretty sure this is bronze , different colour to brass and machines with "curly bits" not the spray you get with brass, but I will play safe and buy some known bronze for the bushes and use this for the fittings Thanks for the help

how can you tell bronze from brass by looking at it ? I have a casting that was for a traction engine front hub , I want to use it for boiler fittings , its a different colour from brass ,

an up date on my friend's engine

. I put a new o ring in it to no improvement , so I made a blank cylinder head , lo ! compression restored So it must be the valves leaking . Been trying to grind them in with some metal polish but they are so tiny !!!!!

sorry I opened a can of worms , seems like this one needs a new Viton piston ring

26/07/2019 07:41:37

thanks for the help . I will ask on that site if they should have some compression

25/07/2019 18:48:42

A friend brought round a little hit and miss engine , he has had it running once , but it doesn't want to run now. There seems to be no compression , has anyone got one of these? Should there be any compression ?

Thread: my work

I know these engines will never be show quality , but the satisfaction you get when something you have made yourself actually works is worth the year's effort . Since I have been on my own , the last five years, the time spent in the shed has helped me stay alive and not sink into a pit of darkness , Many thanks to all those who have answered my sometimes stupid questions . I would like to build a IC engine next . but not too small, as my 80 year old fingers cant cope with tine components . I can turn a flywheel up to about 12 inches on my Colchester . Any thoughts ?

regards Phil

Thread: small belts
24/06/2019 06:04:40

thanks ,I will try Forest Classics and Beltingonline and see what turns up

23/06/2019 19:10:05

sorry I am in UK , it seems suitable belts are available in USA , I do have a couple of elastic bands from the post man , but not sure when to obtain similar ones , these degrade quite quickly

23/06/2019 18:19:45

I have been looking for a belt to run a governor on my steam engine . Rather than the spring ones . needs to be about 12 inch long about 1/8 wide . . , I cant find anything in this country , have anyone come across something similar ?
