Thread: Is this really a clock?
The guy just didn't know when to stop cutting gears.
Thread: another mystery object
Looks like a type J.
Wire colours - **LINK**
Thread: Age related macular degeneration.
Is your condition 'dry' or 'wet' as a friend of ours has wet and any info is useful.?
Thread: Work bench to mount lathe
I have to admit that my mini-lathe is mounted higher than my suggested elbow height to save me bending over the workpiece so much.
Some people say that with your elbow at 90° your hand should fall onto the cross slide operating handle.
Also consider how bent your back may be when watching the work piece and turning the controls.
Thread: fire warning
Lucky escape indeed.
Other fire creators can be magnifying mirrors and bullseye glass windows.
Thread: tachometer wiring
Turn the magnet around, north to south poles or the other way, this caught me out when I installed mine last year.
Thread: Silver soldering problem
You say that you melted the end of the job.
If you overheat the base then the filler will simply run off, the flux has already benn burnt away.
Thread: Wobbler No.2
Looks good, well done.
Thread: Am I getting an irritable old git?
I think that at our age(s) we should be allowed to be an old git if we so wish.
At 70 I feel that if we fail to correct these errors then the youth of today and tomorrow will miss out on the joy of language.
I've recently acquired a new fountain pen and now enjoy, once again, writing letters to friends and family using writing paper and envelopes. I think that they are appreciated by the recipients too.
Thread: How would you get this apart?
If you plan to modify it why not make what you want or do you only have a wood lathe?
Thread: removing speed control
Shaking itself to death is a known effect of running these models according to lots of various forums; speed control probably fine.
Thread: Act Quick, England Tickets
Thread: Hot rail tracks
There was a photo of some buckled track near Glasgow in various papers...
Thread: Electric motor reassembly
Preloading the bearings perhaps?
Thread: signal box bell codes
I'm no expert but I believe it depends of the possible length of clear line available for safety spacings.
Does info here help at all? https://signalbox.org/block/absolute03.htm

Thread: Governor pulley belt
Yes, the governor pulley is too high, the belt is wasting energy trying to force the pulley downwards to level the drive line.
If the pulley cannot be lowered then consider making some idler pulleys to raise the drive line.
Thread: New shed- bedding material
Are you wanting something to support the shed when it is position or just something to fill in any gaps that there may be between the shed frame and the slabs?
How firmly fixed are the slabs?

Thread: Motor wiring
The diagram from the motor cover gives you the wire positions as far as I can see.
Red, black, yellow and the cap.
Thread: Workshop Build - Floor height
I'm not an expert but as it's timber have the concrete rising above the surrounding area to prevent water pooling around the base timbers.
Too, have the floor joists at the standard building 16" centres, check your tape measure and you will see a mark every 16". This will make finding them easier later on if you want to screw something down.
