Thread: What Did You Do Today 2021
it may well be worth a trip to A&E if still operating - some years ago I trapped the end of a finger rather badly, cursed and waited for it to heal - a couple of weeks later it still felt wrong, the GP sent me onto the specialist section at the hospital, quick xray indicated I broken the tip of a bone on the 1st joint and it had started to heal in the wrong position - was told "you should have come earlier before healing started" but wearing a splint forced it back into a more normal but still wrong position.
Thread: Plans for updating the archaic forum?
It is depressing to read just how much the original + still valid ideas of Tim Berners Lee have been prostituted in the name of commerce and attention getting - his original, and to me the all important one, was to present the information in a form the user could readily change (eg by altering font size, type, background + text colour etc - not only did this allow all the options above it also allowed the easy use of speech synthesis for those with impaired sight.
Michael - the profit from this site is that made by tracking users and delivering their details for directed advertising - forced login etc is just one way but the whole system owned by some 2 or 3 mega commercial non-tax-paying companies uncontrolled by local laws must end soon as many countries have now realised the social damage they have inflicted and will continue to do unless some control is imposed - this site is just a tiny cog in this surveillance system

Thread: One place for all ???
Join a local ME Society if you haven't already - they often hold rummage/disposal sales of which once we can all meet up again there should be many as there will be 18month's or more pent up supply by next autumn.
Thread: MEW 300 IS HERE !
well maybe things have improved as #301 has just dropped thro my letter box - the earliest it has ever been wrt to date it appears in the shops - this time it arrived in the standard plastic bag rather than a special delivery.

Thread: Hey you! What lathe? Why?
Re the IMO quite rude "Hey You" address it was a late Archbishop of Westminster when promoted Cardinal on being asked how he should be addressed stated he would respond to most things but drew the line at "Hey You".
Thread: Sheared screw in wood
use a soldering iron to apply significant heat to the top of the screw once you have dug out enough surrounding wood to allow the pliers to get a grip - should break any grip in the wood
Thread: Have we been invaded?
What amazes me is that there are enough idiots in the world that such stuff has a market - somehow I suspect nothing to do with model engineering nor any poster to this board but suggest there must be a known hack route into this type of forum hence their appearance here

Thread: Reported Postings
I suggest that if this MB is ever updated that emoijs be removed as these do not usually help any argument - your English should be sufficiently clear not to be mis-interpreted.
However as a one time moderator of a family history board that even this could get posts from some with deranged minds who on being corrected resorted to a deluge of personal insults.
Another problem with family history boards was that newbies having, to their own satisfaction 'proved' a descent reacted very badly when more experienced researchers pointed out the flaw - such reaction has been seen on this board and it is difficult to point out errors/misunderstanding to some people
BR the classic early internet cartoon shows a dog at a keyboard - speech bubble 'on the internet nobody knows you are a dog'
Always remember that unless there is independent proof as to its veracity that any claim on any website can be totally untrue + should not be relied on - especially never make assumptions re names.
Thread: Cookies and similar ...
don't worry Neil will be along in a minute to explain that the the google + facebook cookies added by this site are not trackers but merely benign helps to improve the site design
|Firefox states that it blocks 3 trackers from the Arceuro site (one of which is the ubiquitous google-analytics by which site owners trade your privacy for them getting some info on your use of the web site, another is doubleclick whose function in life is to serve adverts) - however if you click on the close button on the overlay it appears that firefox allows the site to drop three cookies owned by arceuro so under Firefox default settings no real tracking and Firefox can be set to remove all cookies on closing connection
ETA obviously under Android owned by Google you would be tracked to the ends of the earth and beyond (basically Android is a spy device literally tracking your every move- I suspect Apple may well be similar judging from the names in Michaels example|

Thread: Best way to straighten a Long Series drill
Greensands - look at what settings you have (?force https) as it would appear that you are requesting a higher level of crypto than the site uses.
Thread: Cookies and similar ...
they are not cookies but preloaded web images etc in your cache - many pages have a header that loads many images so that they are available for next time - there are extensions for firefox that allow you to block certain sites - personally I'd block the majority of that list as the companies usually drop many trackers and provide you with no benefit - always block 3rd party cookies as these are trackers.

Thread: ebay purchases : VAT
VAT on 2nd hand goods has been standard for years - have you never bought anything from a public auction - the only exceptions being food + I think items placed by private individuals (most auction goods tended to come via commercial clearance companies) though you also pay VAT on the buyers commission - at the local auctions you merely remembered that you paid 50% more than the bid price and bid accordingly - often new buyers didn't realise this and the unpaid for items would reappear in the following week when the trade dealers would put in their lower bids

Thread: So Much For CE Labels!
empty but original rolex boxes (+ other empty packaging of hi value consumer products) sold for considerable money at the local auction house - their intended subsequent use was obvious to all.
Thread: Using an old microwave transformer
I took apart a modern microwave oven which used a HF + much smaller transformer to provide the EHT for the magnetron - the HF was derived by an electronic circuit fed from the rectified mains
Thread: How not to use a clamp
the last tv I had a nominal share in was in a student house in the late sixties (tho i suspect no licence was paid) for the 50+ years since then I've not owned a tv - a fact that the licensing people have great difficulty believing - I've even worked for the Beeb but never saw the need
Thread: Shipping delays and costs
Digging the UK out of the economic black hole caused by Brexit, Covid and Climate change (witness the massive increase in flooding year by year) is going to push the quality of life for most to the levels not that far above basic subsistence - Northern Ireland at least has a get out card by agreeing to a border referendum.
Thread: MEW 300 IS HERE !
to close this saga and illustrate the disconnect between sections of MTM i have just received a nominally couriered copy of #300 the paperwork states delivered to DHP at 14:41 on the 19th Jan and arrived via Royal Mail on 22nd - however I had emailed Beth on 16th stating that not having had any communication from MTM I had bought the sole copy in Smiths - so now I have 2 copies, no explanation of why my subscription was suspended and a rather jaundiced view about MTM
