Thread: New design of mains plug?
31/03/2020 13:54:38

It is allowed to supply an EU plug with a UK adapter if the adapter cannot be removed or cannot be removed without the use of a tool.

I have never understood the British love of fused plugs: most of the world seems to be happy with unfused plugs. None of the electrical equipment that I bought when I lived in Switzerland has a fused plug, for example.

Other than the regulatory requirement here (and after all it does sound like a good idea), can anyone explain why Britain and the colonies have this different plug philosophy?

It’s because we tried to save copper after the war by using ring circuits for sockets. Other countries use radial circuits with the fuse in the consumer unit rather than the plug.

Any apparatus supplied with this plug is probably going to be dangerous.

This non compliant design plug will not have a certified mains lead and usually the conductors are too thin for safety.

The only thing to do with it is to cut the lead into short pieces or burn it and bend or break the plug pins so that it cannot be inserted in a socket.

i would smash up the rest of apparatus and dump it in the recycling.

Thread: Warco lathe mill attachment
10/09/2019 06:46:26

I have a Warco 280 with the milling head attached, it has Warco glass scale DRO on all axes.

This arrangement is the only way I could fit it in my work shop, but it does make it awkward to use at times.

If you can, you will be much better off to have them as separate machines.

I had the same problem with my Warco 285; I moved the DRO to the chuck side of the saddle, a bit of work but definitely worth it.

Thread: anealing piano wire
10/04/2019 16:25:41

The problem with annealing piano wire is that hardening it again is pretty much impossible.

I know of people who have spark eroded holes in it but it’s too much hassle for most people

Thread: Cox Per Wee or Tee Dee

There is a plan for a 0.3cc deisel MM137 available from Sarik Hobbies which might be a better choice.

The ball-ended conrod design was used in several makes in that era. Cox sold (and the people who do them now still sell) a re-setting tool consisting of a metal base to put the piston in and a slotted tube to fit around the conrod. The end of the tube is then hit with a hammer until the required fit is obtained.

Purely curiosity, what speed should the die heads be used at?

I use old transformer laminations though they may not be so easy to find now.

Thread: Age related macular degeneration.
12/07/2018 09:43:01

One thing I should mention which is common to all forms of sight loss including macular degeneration and cataracts is that when the brain doesn’t receive the expected signals from the optic nerves, it can make up its own visions from the memory. This is known as Charles Bonnet Syndrome and can be really alarming if you aren’t prepared for it.

11/07/2018 14:58:03

I have a similar condition except that mine is Macular Dystrophy, which is not thought to be age related.

The only treatment for it is supplementary pills like Macushield Gold, not particularly cheap at a quid a day, but better than nothing.

One of the effects of this condition is that straight lines have bumps in them, it seems strange at first to see power lines with these impossible features.

You could buy a digital thermometer from eBay, about five quid, and monitor it.

Then you would have some idea of what’s happening.

Paul Whitley

It is beyond me why you keep harping on about PAT testing, PAT testing is only applicable to apparatus that has already been sold. Third party testing is for products that have yet to go to market. Third party testing is carried out by independent test houses such as Underwriters Laboratories, TUV, KEMA KEUR, VDE, Intertek, NEMKO, BSI, FIMKO, IMQ and many others.

I’m sorry, but there is no way to overcome the dyed in the wool pre-conceived fallacious arguments put forward by some of the posters in this thread so I will take no further part in it.
