Thread: Silver soldering boiler
27/02/2021 18:16:11

Nice work David but if it was mine I would have to change the fasteners for hex head think they would improve the look of what is a very nice boiler a little more yes

Made a bit of progress on boiler and made a small drain cock for condensate in chimney, made chimney and started mounting boiler and engin.

Thread: You think you have trouble starting your car on a cold morning?
27/02/2021 16:51:11
Posted by Bill Dawes on 19/02/2021 14:11:53:

I remember back in the 60s still living with my parents in Brum being woken up every morning by a builder trying to start his Ford Cortina estate, it just churned over and over for what seemed eternity. From that day on I have always contended that Ford were pioneers in long life batteries.

Bill D.

I had same problem went out house at 5 a.m when on 6-2 so didn't like waking neighbours so I fitted a 6 volt HT coil and a resistor but when starting the coil was fed with 12 volts this cured the cold start problem.

Thread: Using a vfd for two machines
20/02/2021 15:28:54

A pair of electrically/mechanically interlocked contactors comes to mind other ways could be a rotorary switch, vfd feeds a 4pin socket into which you could plug machines into as and when. If it was me I would go with the contactors and interlock these with the vfd to make sure the load could not be disconnected whilst running.

Thread: Engineering / Modelling Books for Winter Evenings?
13/02/2021 14:27:19
Posted by Dr_GMJN on 13/02/2021 13:00:28:

Just to get the thread back on track a bit:

I'm planning on building a 1" "Minnie" Traction engine at some point in the middle distance. I have all the articles from ME, but wondered if there was a 'proper' physical book I could get on building a traction engine in general? Doesn't have to be specific, just something to read instead of shuffling individual sheets of A4 around. I know the ME articles were made into a book, but I think its very expensive.
