Thread: Interesting demonstration of hydraulic pressure
19/04/2022 10:13:14

A new hydraulic pump was spilt open as it started due to a blocked/jambed relief valve, the 0 - 5000psi gauge in the system never worked again. Even small hydraulic jacks and rams often work at 10,000psi.- YES 4 zeros ! I have 25 and 50 ton jacks.

There was a news item a number of years ago on the bomb squad being called in to deal with a quantity of home brew bottles that were exploding ! I used to use 5gallon stainless barrels, the valve gear was altered and a sink tap fitted - it really was ON TAP ! Noel.

Thread: Doncaster 2022 Exhibition - is it on?

The Midland Model Engineering exhibition WILL be going ahead, tickets are on sale ! ONLY action by the goverment will stop it. This information is from the organisers this morning. The garden railway show by the same organiseres was held only a few weeks ago. Noel.

Check the contact rating for your PANIC button ! Many are intended to operate the coil on a relay or contactor NOT the full load of the motor. Just a thought. Noel.

Wrought iron or the end of a billet of rolled steel. About 45 years ago I had to repair the mounting plate on a attachment digger for a tractor, the boss came away, so rewelded it, it came away again so reweld ! At the 3rd break I studdied it closely and found that the sheet of 3/8"steel was in fact a series of layers of iron and slag. My guess at the time was it was the end of a billet and the mill scale and iron had been rolled so many times to form this coposit structure. It should have been scrapped at the mill and remelted. I gave up welding it and ordered a new mounting. Old chain ( big stuff ) will have this structure and is valuable as true wrought iron is seldom made now and it is re rolled. Noel.

Thread: Home made furnace

Rigidised ceramic fibre, or preformed tube ! I would recomend American K 23, this is in brick form, VERY efficient and light, can be cut with a knife. Both these substances are available from pottery kiln suppliers or other. Both are ideal for non ferrous metals but will struggle with iron. Where abouts in the UK are you, I have a good supply of 25mm ceramic fibre blanket. Built mine 25 years ago and still going strong never been relined ! Noel.

Thread: Wiring and connectors
12/04/2022 09:35:15

Multi strand wire and fluids are never happy bed fellows ! Ask any one who had a Landrover TD5 engine ! engine oil would cappiliary from the engine to the computer under the seat along about 8' of wire. Noel.

Thread: O rings
10/04/2022 09:19:15

Hi KIWI, For harder rings ask for shore 90, the nornal O ring is shore 70. It might be worth trying a metric ring of slightly larger dimension eg 3.5 mm section X 50mmID. For what they cost it's worth a try. Noel.

Two magazines but only one pocket, and one that is getting shallower by the day. I could not afford both and after issue 300 I let my subscription lapse in December ! With times getting hard, how many more will give up ? Noel

Thread: Polishing Brass
06/04/2022 16:31:25

AS Bezzer, but a few warnings ! BE VERY careful not to let the metal dig in to the mop, always work towards an edge not away from it and keep the work CONSTANTLY on the move, or grooves will be cut at any edges if you dwell. IT is a VERY dirty job ! For materials Etc, try the polishing shop. Good Luck, Noel.

Thread: Connection to compressor
06/04/2022 16:08:36

As has been said We need more info ! Does the compressor have a reducing valve ( down to below 15psi). Standard 1/4" PCL connectors will allow different lines to be used eg, blow up tyres. For small bore airline and fittings the names to look for are NORGREN or FESTO. They will do all the fittings you need. Noel

Thread: Murad Cadet Restoration Project

Check continuity on the 2 wires to the centrifugal switch OK ? check also red to black - note the reading ! Then white to white again note reading. 1 to 3 is a dead short and something is not right with 4,5,6. All the right wires are there but the orderis odd. Check from the red wire to find the other end, that will be the start windings ! there should be continuity between the other 2. That will give you the 4 wires you need. The insulation needs sleeving it is in poor condition. Till next time. Noel.
