I can imagine a few ways to focus while maintaining parallelism of the slide, but so far my ideas tend to be either complicated or difficult to miniaturize.

Any brilliant ideas from the readers?

I would first consider using a pair of parallel flexures

… but if you are prepared to stray a long way from the original, there’s always piezo actuators devil

Have a look at this: https://www.elliotscientific.com/Precision-Positioning/Elliot-Martock-Products/Flexure-Stages-and-Precision-Positioning-Solutions/174-XYZ-Flexure-Stages/Elliot-Martock-MDE120-Elliot-Gold-Series-XYZ-Flexure-Stage-with-Simple-Manual-Adjusters

Then find the Martock patent [numbers are near bottom of the page]

consider one axis of it … simplify, and scale-down
