Harrison Electrical problem

Evening guys.

I have a Harrison universal mill with a wired in machine light attached. Last week the light stopped working and I naturaly assumed the bulb had died. On replacing the bulb this evening I have come across a small problem. The new bulb is recieving power but the fillament is only glowing a very dull red, in fact it is barely visable. This to me proves that power is reaching the bulb but I have no electrical knowledge whatsoever to proceed any further. I have removed the front electric panel. The switch at the front of the machine for the light is lit up and a low level humming can be heard from what I can only assume is a transformer ? The light is an original fitting and not a later addition from what I can see.

Are there any obvious solutions or is it just a case of old age. Can this be fixed relatively easily or is it time to buy a seperate work light. My other concern is that if this electrical fault is something more serious could it affect the rest of the machine in any way.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance

Dave

Did you check that the new bulb was the same rated voltage and wattage as the old one?

Hi Dave C

If it the same as the Harrison Lathe I am familiar with the lamp voltage is 50v. If you still have the old lamp the voltage may be printed on it, worth a check.

Stupidly. No It didn't occur to me. I saw the 40W but the rest was unreadable with my eyes. After a closer look you are correct it is a 25V bulb.

Many thanks for the assistance. Simple solutions are always the best. Even if they do make you feel stupid.

Regards

Dave

Dave

I have got quite used to feeling stupid but, as they say, there are no stupid questions !

In case you can't source a 25v bulb locally there is one advertised here

Recheck:-

Oh heck Dave I see that this seller is in Australia so postage might be a bit expensive!

Anyone else know of a source in the UK?

Cheers

Norman

I found some in this country with an EBAY search .

Alternatively try RS or CPC, maybe the local branch of an electrical wholesalers is another possibility.

Hi Dave,
I have 4 25 volt 25 watt bayonet cap bulbs you can have if you want to collect them. They are about the same size as a normal mains 40 watt GLS bulb. I live near Ormskirk about 30 miles from your location in your profile. PM me if you want them.

Les.

Thanks to everyone for offers of donations and also advice. It has all been greatfully recieved.

I have since found a UK supplier of bulbs on the internet. BLT direct .com . They have a very wide range of quite reasonably priced bulbs available and I have now placed an order with them.

I have no connection with the company but it may be of use to others.

Once again many thanks to all.
