16 forum posts 6 photos | Hi,
After spending an exellent day at the Harrogate mex ,I bought this centre square from one of the stalls. As you can see from the picture it does not quite live up to the promise on the packet it came in. I think I could have made a better job out of lollypop sticks using a knife and fork! grrrr Oh well there are many stories like this I'm sure . |

Moderator 2760 forum posts 100 photos 18 articles | Hi oil magnet. You can still use it although I would send it back for a replacement including cost of postage. Draw four lines at 90 degrees. The centre is in the small square in the middle. regards david |

You could always make one, very simple and you would only have yourself to blame if it was not spot on! Edited By KWIL on 18/05/2012 10:20:29 |

| 792 forum posts 48 photos | Are you sure that it is the straight parts of the square are contacting the bar annd not just the tips. Looking at the picture the bar looks to be on the limit of the capacity of this square. If the square is the fault it is a very large error in manufacturing. I was looking at some 90 Deg. squares on a stand at Harrogate and they were well off square. I finished up buying a Soba one which I could not check at the time as it was in a sealed box. It did turn out to be OK. Les. |

| 1021 forum posts 81 photos | Hi OM Well it's nice to know that they have Friday afternoons in China too! Seeing your pic I whizzed out to the workshop and had a look at my SOBA square - I think you were a bit unlucky! Yes easy to make I guess but you could spend all your time making tools and ( when they work!!) these are cheap enough. Regards Norman |

| 398 forum posts 5 photos | Hi Just out of interest I transferred your picture of said centre finder into my drawing package and measured the included angle between the blade and the exposed leg. This turned out to be within 0.5 degrees of 45 degrees. While not a particularly accurate way to check things it does indicate that the error you are getting is greater than any apparent error of the finder. I support the comments by Les that the bar looks to large for the finder. Prior to sending it back I would try it out on a smaller diameter rod and see if the same error exists there. Cheers Martin
Superimposed the bar/rod onto the finder and it should fit between the legs albeit a bit close but should be OK . A quick measurement fom the photo on the drawing package supports this with the legs measuring, from photo, 50mm and the radius of the bar/rod 38mm. Not true world but gives a relative measurement that confirms clearance Edited By Martin W on 18/05/2012 11:05:02 Edited By Martin W on 18/05/2012 11:09:44 |

16 forum posts 6 photos | Hi all, Just unlucky this time I guess. Its only a small item so more annoying than anything else. Two more pics, the penny shows the square remedy suggested by DavidClark1, and the other showshow badly offset the scribbing arm is. Thanks for the interest

Oil Magnet if I may suggest go to your local trading standards officer (if they are not in conference (aka down the pub). This is totally contrary to the Sale of Good Act as it is “NOT of merchantable quality and fit for the purposes for which it was intended” i.e. to mark the centre of a round item. Mind you if they were anything like the lot where I used to live you could NEVER contact them! rdgs Dick |

You should be able to file or mill that true. If I'm not completely off my shoes, this would rather need the mysterious putting-on tool than milling something off (and making the error even larger). But who knows, maybe I am... Greetings, Hansrudolf |

Greetings, Hansrudolf Hi Hansrudolf, take another look at OM's close up photo of the square, it clearly shows that the marking off blade is over the centre point of the vee, hence the need to cut some off. Regards Nick. |
